From the Principal
It was great to be present at the 2016 NAPLAN Awards Ceremony on November 3rd in Penguin. Students from the North West Coast were recognised for their achievements by the Minster for Education, Jeremy Rockliff, and representatives from the Department of Education. Matilda Fidler was invited to attend as our top student in NAPLAN for 2016.
Here is Matilda receiving her award certificate from the Minister. Well done Matilda, you have done a fantastic job!
Classes have been working hard in the lead up to end of year events. As always, this is a very busy time of the year. We appreciate the support of families and welcome you to become involved in activities as they occur. Keep an eye out for upcoming details in both our newsletter and on the Facebook page.
If you are aware of families that have not yet subscribed to our newsletter, please let them know they can contact the office and we can help out. We are also launching our new 'Schoolzine' app which will enable smartphone, tablet and IPhone access to our newsletter. As always, we appreciate feedback so please let us know what you think of the new format.
Hillcrest Primary School has a new app!
SZapp is a great way to keep up to date with all of our latest news and information. Using SZapp will give you easy access to information such as:
- Newsletters on the go
- Latest News & Reminders
- Forms and Documents

Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids
Our Hilly Kids focus topic for this week was Respecting Differences. The topics for Weeks 7 & 8 will be Sharing & Respecting Property.
Sharing
If you want people to share with you then you should share with them. It makes you feel good and them feel good too. People like to play with others who share. It doubles the fun. Playing football by yourself is not as good as with others.
Things to share: your toys, your games, your football, your time, your love and your feelings.
Great ways to share a toy:
- Share with someone who will enjoy it
- Look after it
- Take turns with the toy
- If there's a problem work it out together
- Give it back at the end of the game to the owner
- Have fun together
Life is lonely all by yourself, so share it with someone!
Respecting Property
Around our school, our home and the homes of our friends there are many things we use that make our life more enjoyable. At home it may be the television, the stereo or the computer, at school it may be sports equipment, art materials or some of the play equipment in the yard. Whatever we use, we need to look after, not just for ourselves but because others like to use these things as well.
Think carefully about your most precious toy or game (your property). How would you feel if it was broken by a friend who didn't have respect for the property of others?
Our HKFK student of the week for Being Assertive was Imogen Hamilton from 4-5K and for Being Resilient was Bryce Yaxley from 3-4D. Congratulations, Imogen and Bryce!
Well done to our other class representatives for Being Assertive!

Athletics Carnival Sausage Sizzle
The school Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday, November 24th. A sausage sizzle will be available for students and families. There will be no other lunch orders on this day; however, the canteen will be open for snack items at recess and lunch and for parents to purchase tea or coffee for $2. An order form was sent home earlier in the week. Please return it to the school office with the money by next Tuesday, November 22nd. Parents are welcome to order as well. If the carnival is cancelled due to bad weather, the sausage sizzle will still go ahead.
End of Year Celebration Concert
Come along and see what our students at Hillcrest Primary School can do! This year there will be 2 performances in our Hall on Thursday, December 15th. The Matinee Performance will be at 1pm and the Evening Performance will be at 6.30pm. The estimated length of the performance is 1½ hours.
Tickets are free; however, there will be a limit of 3 tickets available per family due to safety regulations. HPS students do not require a ticket, but every other person must present a ticket for entry to the performance.
Because we have to limit the number of people at each session, our evening performance is aimed at working parents who are unable to attend the matinee.
A note will be sent home tomorrow for you to indicate which performance you would like to attend. Please return the slip below by Wednesday, Nov. 30th to reserve your tickets. Please also indicate if you would like your name added to the waiting list for additional tickets.
From Monday, Dec 5th to Friday, Dec 9th the tickets will be sent home or held at the office for collection, depending on your choice. Lost tickets will not be replaced. After Dec 9th uncollected tickets will be made available to those on the waiting list. While you will be able to put your name on the waiting list, there is no guarantee that there will be extra tickets or that you will receive the full number requested.
Remembrance Day
On Friday, November 11th, we had our Remembrance Day ceremony. As part of that service Mr Fenn, Fletcher and Zakaree planted a lone pine tree that Mrs Kelly purchased for our school. Imogen read a short story about the significance of this tree.
Lift
The school Library is open for families to visit and borrow each Thursday and Friday afternoons and before school Wednesday to Friday. Soon we will have resource packs for families to borrow. The resource packs will include games and activities to extend children's literacy and numeracy learning at home.
Invitation to attend a light lunch and find out what Tim Tams and Reading have in common
On Thursday, November 24th, after the early childhood children finish the athletics carnival, we will be hosting a light lunch prior to a session 'What Do Reading and Tim Tams Have in Common?'
Kerrie Blythe from the Devonport LiNC will be taking the 45 minute session in our school library. She will take you on a fun and tasty journey to discover just what Tim Tams have in common with reading. Lunch will be served from 12:30pm and the session will start at 1pm. If you plan to order a sausage from the sausage sizzle, feel free to bring your sausage with you. All parents are invited to attend. If you would like to join us please reply to me by email: ann-maree.mulcaster@education.tas.gov.au. If you have a paper version of the newsletter then return the following information to the office or see me in person.
I, _______________________________________,(please print name) would like to attend the 'What Do Reading and Tim Tams have in common?' session on November 24th. If you have any dietary requirements, please specify here: _______________________________________________
Hope to see you there.

Devonport City Council Chambers Excursion
On our excursion we visited the Devonport City Council Chambers. Mason and Macy got to put on the Mayor's robe and chain of office. The chain of office has the name of all the previous mayors of Devonport.

After we visited the Mayor we walked around Stage 1 of the Living City area and through the Rooke Street Mall to find out about the history of the Devonport CBD. We met former Hillcrest student, Sarah, who works at the Telstra shop and asked her what it was like to work in the CBD. She said it was always interesting and she got to meet a lot of people.
Here is what some of us had to say about our excursion:
Crescendo Concert
Bunnings Burnie Christmas Family Night
This free event will run from 6-8pm on Thursday, December 8th. There will be a jumping castle, kids' craft, a puppet making workshop, a puppet show and a recycled Christmas tree competition. Hope to see you there!
