Mid-year reports go home

From the Principal

Last week students in grade 3 and 4 had the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports as part of the grade 3/4 Sports Expo. Students had a great time and reports were very positive regarding behaviour and participation. Thanks to all staff who helped out on the day.

Thanks to students and families who joined our ‘walking buses’ last Friday, as part of the Walk Safely to School Day. As a Move Well Eat Well school, it was great to see our community participate in a healthy activity that promotes safety around roads. Thanks go to Ann-Maree Mulcaster who organised fruit for participants on their arrival at school.

Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids

Our HKFK focus for this week has been “Respecting the Opposite Gender”. Next week’s focus topic will be “Respecting Adults” and the week after will be “Respecting Property”.

Respecting Adults

There are many adults around our school, home and community who help us. It may be your teacher, the canteen worker, the bus driver or your next door neighbour.

It’s not OK to ignore what they ask you to do. It’s not OK to be rude when they talk to you.

These people are there to help you and guide you into the correct way of doing things and to follow the rules of society. They are always looking after us, making sure we are safe and happy.

We need to show respect to these adults by:

  • using our manners by saying please and thank you
  • following their instructions
  • listening when they speak
  • giving way
  • offering to help

Respecting adults is important. All of us would like to be respected and all children should show respect to all adults, whether they be our parents, grandparents, bus drivers, shop owners or teachers. Respecting adults shows everyone that we are friendly and appreciative children at Hillcrest.

Respecting Property

Around our school, our home and the homes of our friends there are many things we use that make our life more enjoyable. At home it may be the television, the stereo or the computer, at school it may be sports equipment, art materials or some of the play equipment in the yard. Whatever we use, we need to look after, not just for ourselves but because others like to use these things as well.

Think carefully about your most precious toy or game (your property). How would you feel if it was broken by a friend who didn't have respect for the property of others?

Our Hilly Kid of the Week for “Body Language” was Chelsey Gardner from 3-4D and for “Respecting Our School” was Chloe Lunson from 2-3P. Our Aussie of the Month for April was Cohen Best. Congratulations, Chelsey, Chloe and Cohen!

Well done to our other class representatives:

Biggest Morning Tea

Yesterday we had our Biggest Morning Tea to raise money to the Cancer Council. We would like to thank all the parents and students that attended the Biggest Morning Tea. Also, a big thank you to Paul from our local IGA for donating some Milo, and to Bobby the Milk Man who kindly donated some milk. We hope you all liked the story that Lee and Jess read to us: ‘The Cow Tripped Over The Moon’.

Sports Expo was a ‘HIT’ for the 3/4 Hillcrest Team!

It was a beautiful, sunny day as the grade 3/4 team from Hillcrest headed to the 3/4 Expo. The day was very well organised and the coaches had prepared some awesome sport tasters for our students to participate in. We had the chance to mix with children from other Devonport schools and try out different sports most of the children hadn’t tried before. It was wonderful to see so many positive attitudes and smiles from our ‘Hilly Kids’.

A big thank you to Mr Carter, office staff, teacher assistants and the teachers for organising and helping us to participate in such an awesome day!

Encouraging walking and bike riding to school

Walking, bike riding and scooting are cheap and healthy activities which are fun. They have many physical, social and environmental benefits. Walking and bike riding can help:

  • Build strong bones & muscles
  • Teach road and pedestrian rules

Tuckerbox Tips

What about muesli bars?

Most muesli, breakfast or cereal bars provide a small amount of fibre from oats and dried fruit but many are high in fat and sugar and are best eaten occasionally. Try some of the following alternatives to muesli bars in your child’s lunchbox:

  • Fruit or vegetable scones, pikelets or muffins
  • Fruit bread or fruit buns
  • Weetbix or Vitabrits spread with vegemite and topped with cheese.

What about dried fruit?

Dried fruit is included as part of the fruit food group and is a good source of vitamins and fibre. It is very high in natural sugar (energy) and is more likely to stick to teeth than fresh fruit. For these reasons, only eat small amounts of dried fruit and combine it with tooth-friendly foods such as cheese and vegetables or cereal and milk.
