From the Principal
As you are no doubt aware, students will be travelling to the Devonport Entertainment Centre to watch a Don College performance of Shrek the Musical Jr., tomorrow 23rd June. Two of our students, Elliott Goodwin and Ellie Girdler, will be making cameo appearances in the show. I am very excited that two of our students will be up on stage and look forward to seeing what is sure to be an excellent production. As they say in theatre – Break a leg!
A reminder that our School Association Committee will be meeting tonight at 7pm in the staffroom. Any member of our school community is welcome to come along and find out what it is all about. If you have any questions about what the role of the School Association is, or would like to get involved, please contact the school office.
I have enjoyed reading through all student reports in readiness for them being sent home tomorrow. It has been wonderful to read about the breadth of learning that has taken place across the school. The reports are an important way that we communicate your child’s progress so please take the time to read through them, with your child.
We also strongly encourage you to make an appointment for 3-way conferences. Thanks to those families who have already made a booking to see their child’s teacher. If you have not done so, please contact the office to make a time to meet with your child and their teacher. I look forward to seeing families next week.

Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids
Our HKFK focus for this week has been “Respecting the Environment”. Next week’s focus topic will be “Respecting Opinions” and the week after will be “Respecting Differences”.
Respecting Opinions
If people feel that you respect what they say they will enjoy being with you and talking to you. They will feel safe around you because they know you respect their feelings and their opinions. They will share with you and form better friendships because they know you will not put them down or laugh at them.
All of us have the right to express ideas and opinions and often our ideas are different to those of other people. If you respect everyone’s right to offer an opinion you will get along better with people and learn so much more. You may not agree with them, but you can respect them.
If we are Respecting the Opinions of others we will be:
- Understanding
- Nice
- Fair
- Listening
- Caring
- Polite
- Compromising
We won’t always agree with everything everyone says but:
- Don’t just focus on what you disagree with
- Don’t get angry or sarcastic
- Don’t start your sentence with “No” or “No way”
- Don’t call people names or put them down
Don’t just knock ideas. Come up with an alternative plan
Respecting Differences
There are many things we have in common and share at Hillcrest Primary, but there are also many ways in which we differ. Some of us like football, while others prefer netball. Some like maths, others prefer reading books. Some people like to listen to CDs, others like to play on the computer. Some like the Western Bulldogs and some go for the bombers. Some of us are tall, some of us are short. Some are strong and some are fast. In some way or another we are all different and that makes us all the more interesting. It would be pretty boring if everyone went around doing exactly the same thing – we would all be like robots. Thankfully we are not robots, we are human and we are all different. Even in the same family we are different from our brothers and sisters. Rather than worrying about these differences we need to accept and respect them, and also to celebrate them. It is good that we are all different from each other and all special and unique.
Our Hilly Kid of the Week for “Respecting Property” was Lillian Tombs from 4-5K and for “Respectful Language” was Zoe Moore from 5-6H. Congratulations, Lillian and Zoe!

2-3 Peace
A fortnight ago our grade 3 students had the wonderful opportunity to attend the grade 3-5 Swimming and Water Safety Program with Mr Carter and the swimming coaches at the Ulverstone Pool. They had a wonderful time becoming responsible around water while having heaps of fun getting wet.
“Three things I was able to do in the pool on the first day were: having a free swim, swimming under water and swimming from one side to the other.” Mylee

Launching into Learning
On Friday, June 9th we had a music therapist come to playgroup to play some musical games with us. It was lots of fun.

Family Food Swaps
There are plenty of ways to introduce lots of simple family food swaps. Try these:
SWAP white bread for wholegrain
varieties.
SWAP big bowls for small bowls when eating
occasional treats like ice cream.
SWAP high-sugar, low fibre breakfast cereals for
one that is high in grains and fibre.
SWAP a fruit bar for fresh fruit.
SWAP butter for low-fat margarine.
SWAP frying foods for steaming &
grilling.
SWAP sweetened fizzy drink for plain soda water
or a glass of water.
SWAP high-salt canned food, stock, sauces &
biscuits for lower-salt varieties.

Tuckerbox Tips
Snacks should be thought of as a ‘mini-meal’ and made from everyday foods. Try these snacks for after school:
- Fresh or stewed fruit topped with yoghurt or custard
- Fruit smoothie: blend soft fruit (eg kiwi, banana, strawberries) with milk and yoghurt
- Breakfast cereal and milk
- English muffin, crumpet or toast with spread
- Fruit toast
- Small serve baked beans or spaghetti on toast
- Weetbix or Vitabrits with sliced banana, honey or peanut butter
- Celery sticks filled with peanut butter, cheese or sultanas.
