End of Term Assembly – Last day of term 3

From the Principal

What an amazing start to the new term! Students have returned with a positive attitude and are enjoying learning and working together. It is a pleasure to walk around classrooms and the playground to see the excellent work and play happening. Well done!

Thanks to families who responded to our spot poll regarding offering a personal development program from grade 3-6. Of the replies we had 76.2% return with a yes, 0% no and 23.8% wanting more information. Our School Association will discuss this result at the next meeting, to decide when to start the program.

As you are no doubt aware, Reece High School will be holding their annual information night this Thursday, 3rd August from 6:30 pm. This is a great opportunity for families with a student in grade 6 to find out more about the school and take a tour of the facilities. If you require further information, please feel free to contact Reece high School on 6420 8100.

As some of our School Association Committee members will be attending the Reece Information Night our meeting has been postponed until Thursday, 10th August. The focus topic will be the new Education Act. If you wish to find out more about what we do, or want to become involved, please feel free to come along. The meetings are held in the school staffroom at 7pm. Hope to see you there!

Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids

Our HKFK focus for this week has been “Group Decision Making”. Next week’s focus topic will be “Negotiating” and the week after will be “Being Assertive”.

Negotiating – Why learn this skill?

If you want someone to do something for you or to give you permission to do something, the best way to get what you want is to negotiate. Negotiation involves trying to get what you want by firstly working out what the other person wants and trying to give it to them. This way is called a “win-win” way of negotiation because both people get something they want. It is different from a “win-lose” approach where someone gets what they want and the other person doesn’t get anything.

Negotiating needs to be planned and each side has to complete their side of the bargain. For example: you may want a ride to footy training so you negotiate with mum to give you a ride in return you will put the rubbish out. If you do not keep your part of the bargain you won’t be trusted the next time and the relationship suffers.

Remember: You are more likely to get what you want and keep friends if the other person gets something, too.

Do

  • Decide what you want
  • Think about what the other person might want in return (for example, they might want to be sure that something they lend you will be looked after)
  • Pick a good time to ask, the other person will get something they want too
  • Use a friendly voice
  • Ask directly if you can’t work out what they want in return
  • Be accepting if the other person won’t agree with what you want; you won’t always get what you want
  • Keep your side of the bargain

Don’t

  • Ask at an inconvenient time (for example, when the other person is busy or talking to someone else)
  • Use a grizzly, whingeing voice
  • Threaten, sulk, insult or get angry if you don’t get what you want.

Being Assertive – standing up for yourself

The best way is to:

  • Tell them to stop annoying you, or firmly ignore their behaviour and walk away
  • Speak in a firm not angry voice
  • Stand tall
  • Look into their eyes firmly (but not in a threatening way)
  • Stay in control of yourself

Don’t:

  • Give in to others when you don’t want to
  • Let other people continue to do bad things to you
  • Talk quietly, mumble or speak hesitantly
  • Cry, sulk or sob without trying to deal with the problem yourself first
  • Look down at the ground when you are speaking
  • Stand small as if you are trying to hide

When standing up for yourself, remember to always be confident and calm and to remain friendly, but firm.

Our Hilly Kid of the Week for “Respecting Differences” was Piper from 2-3P and for “Sharing” was Maya from 4-5K. Congratulations, Piper and Maya!

Reece High 2018 Information Evening

School Socials – Wednesday, Aug 23rd

This year’s Student Councillors are organising a social for all our students to enjoy. It will be held on WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 23rd. Students in Early Childhood are invited to attend in the GP Hall from 4.30 to 6.00pm and students in Primary Classes are invited to attend from 6.30pm until 8.00pm.

This year’s theme for Book Week is “Escape to Everywhere”, meaning that books can take you anywhere…. and, as our social coincides with Book Week, children are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character .….although it is not compulsory to dress up! There will be a small cost at the door to cover a snack and a drink.

(Please note that this year there will not be a separate Book Week dress up day.)

Woolworths Earn & Learn

July 26th to September 19th

This year we will be participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn program. Through this program we will be able to get new educational resources for our school/early learning centre – and all we need you to do is shop for your groceries at Woolworths. From Wednesday 26th July to Tuesday 19th September or while stock lasts, we are collecting Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers. You will get one Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker for every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco and gift cards). Place the Woolworths Earn & Learn sticker onto a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker sheet and when it’s complete, the sticker sheet can be dropped into the collection box here at school or at your local Woolworths. Or simply drop the stickers into the collection box and we can do the sticking! At the end of the promotion, we’ll be able to get some great new equipment. The range is extensive and offers lots of items ideal for our students – including resources for Maths, English, Science and some fantastic fun supplies for Arts & Craft, Sport and for our library.

Healthy Bones Action Week

Dairy products all start from milk, which is a major source of calcium for growing children. For young children the need for calcium is especially high as skeletal tissue is constantly growing as they develop.

Try these ideas to add dairy foods for strong bones to your child’s lunch:

  • Wholemeal or multigrain crackers with cheese and vegemite
  • Low fat yoghurt
  • Low fat custard with fruit
  • Instant puddings made with milk
  • Creamed rice
  • Cheese cubes and vegetable sticks
