Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids
Our HKFK focus for this week has been Being Resilient/Who Can Help Me? Next week’s focus topic will be Suggesting and Persuading and the week after will be Good Winners/Good Losers.
Suggesting & Persuading
People don’t like being around other people who give orders, criticise all the time and are bossy. But sometimes we would like people to listen to us and to take on our ideas.
The best way to convince others to do what you want, and to co-operate with you, is to make suggestions and give good reasons for your suggestions. A suggestion is tentative and allows others the choice of agreeing to do what you would like or not.
Don’t boss people around and don’t get angry if they don’t agree. Just think of another suggestion.
Make a suggestion in a polite way. Try:
- Why don’t we…
- Perhaps we could…
- How about…
- What if we…
- We could…
Good Winners/Good Losers
Winning is great fun but we should remember that we need to win in a way that keeps our friends and promotes others’ respect for us. You will earn much more respect by being a fair player than you will by being a boastful winner or bad loser. Celebrate successes, but do it in a way that does not offend or hurt others. Remember that you are there to enjoy yourself and are looking forward to the fun of playing, not just winning.
At all times play fairly. Give others a go and stick to the spirit of the rules. In the end the game should be fun for all, win, lose or draw.
Do
Keep smiles and celebrations low-key.
Comment on good players but do not overdo it.
Always try hard even if you are losing.
Thank others for the game.
Encourage your team members and give everyone a go.
Respect your opposition and all their hard work.
Don’t
Don’t boast about your ability or victory.
Don’t comment on how far behind the others are.
Don’t point out where the others are going wrong.
Don’t act happy about others’ mistakes, e.g. don’t clap or laugh at poor
shots.
Don’t cheat or manipulate others.
Our Hilly Kid of the Week for “Including Others” was Hayley from 5-6F and for “Saying No” was Hunta from P-1BE. Congratulations, Hayley and Hunta!

Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes
Starting this week and continuing until the end of term, students at Hillcrest will be supporting the Operation Christmas Child Program by providing appropriated gifts for children around the world who are victims of war, poverty, famine or disease. Please help your child’s class fill a shoebox. Check with their teacher regarding the age and gender of the child that the class shoebox is for.
There is a display in the school library with ideas of what you can send along for the shoeboxes. We ask that students donate one or more of the following gift ideas:
- Something to wear: T shirt, shorts, underwear, a cap, beanie, sandals, etc
- Something to love: teddy bear, doll, soft toy, etc
- Something for school: exercise book, pencil case, pens, pencils, colouring pencils, sharpener, eraser, chalk, etc
- Something to play with: tennis ball, cars, skipping rope, marbles, musical instrument, yoyo, slinky, finger puppets, etc (no battery operated items please)
- Something for personal hygiene: soap, facewasher, toothbrush, hairbrush, comb, hairclips, scrunchies, etc.
- Something special: carry bag, sunglasses, necklace, craft kits, stickers, etc.
It is very important that you NOT include: any food or lollies, toothpaste, shampoo, glass, bubbles, plasticine, batteries, playdough, damaged or used items, mirrors, china, war-related toys including anything with camouflage print, anything that will leak or melt, any gambling related items including cards, dice, play money and dominoes, or anything of a religious, racial or political nature.
If you would like to find out more about Samaritan’s Purse and Operation Christmas Child, please check out their website:

If you would like to make something for the shoeboxes, there are a lot of craft, knitting and sewing ideas at the following link:

We are also on the hunt for empty shoe boxes in good condition as well, if you have any sitting around at home!

Toy Catalogue Fundraiser
Some of our educational suppliers have developed a fundraising initiative which gives you opportunity to purchase quality toys and gifts at competitive prices and, at the same time, provides a fundraising program which will enable us to purchase much needed educational materials. Catalogues were sent home today.
Simply choose the toys and gifts you wish to purchase from the catalogues, complete the order form and, along with your cheque, money order or completed credit card details, return it to the school office by Friday, October 20th. It is a great way to get some Christmas shopping done early!

3-4 Duff
This Term the students in 3-4 Duff have been learning how to do Zentangle Art. The Zentangle Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns.
We have been creating different artwork using the zentangle method. It is similar to a form of scribbling/doodling and the children find it very relaxing and have been impressed with how they have turned out. These are some of our zentangle buildings we created.

5-6 Hortle News
During Mathematics we have been investigating the terms area and perimeter. We have been learning about the difference between the two, and methods for finding them on quadrilaterals such as rectangles and squares. Mr Hortle challenged us to use our area and perimeter knowledge to provide acceptable solutions to three authentic questions about constructing a fence.
Here are our solutions to the most difficult of the three questions:
Grade 1-2 Swimming & Water Safety
Throughout this term we have been working on a plan for the Grade 1-2 Swimming and Water Safety program. We are now finalising details for our program which will be held from Monday, November 27th to Thursday, November 30th. More specific information around this campaign will be forwarded to parents in the near future.

Father’s Day Stall
Thanks to the wonderful efforts and generous donations from parents and students, over $650 was raised from our Father’s Day Stall this year. What an amazing effort!
A big thankyou to Tracy Lee, Mrs Hillier and Mrs Jones for their help on sale day. Congratulations to Joshua from 1-2B, the lucky winner of our Father’s Day Stall draw.

Move Well Eat Well
To be healthy and active all children need physical activity every day. Active children tend to stay within a healthier weight range, build better bones, muscles and joints and have higher self-esteem. Encourage your children to go outside and play and, if you’re lucky, they might just invite you to join them!
Backyard games don’t have to be too complicated. Imagination and available resources will help to dictate what games are played. A little bit of chalk, a skipping rope, a ball and even a cardboard box will present the opportunity to get a great game underway!
Playing with others helps children to develop confidence, share and take turns and develop leadership and teamwork skills. As the spring weather warms up, get the children outside and help them to experience new adventures and challenges as the benefits of play outweigh the risks!

Soccer
The Hillcrest Open 5’s soccer team had a very successful season, winning all the games they played. After the last game they were presented with a shield for the school and a medallion for each player. The team has basically been together since prep, coached by Scott Lunson. This year their team work, passing the ball between players and playing positions was what helped them to win.
Thank you, Mr Lunson!
