Eisteddfod

It was great to attend the Devonport Eisteddfods to watch both the Early Childhood and Primary Choirs recently. The Early Childhood choirs were awarded an Honourable Mention and a Second Place. The Primary Choir won their section as well as being overall Primary winners, with a top score of 94! Well done to all who participated. A special thanks go to Gaye Kelly and Anna Easther, who got the choirs polished for the competition!

Koinz 4 Kidz

A big thank you goes to Sea FM for raising funds in their annual ‘Koinz 4 Kidz’ promotion. This year Hillcrest Primary has received over $700 to go towards our Breakfast Club program – a very worthy cause! Thanks must also go to the community for supporting this annual event. It is very much appreciated.

Student Council Rep Zac and Mr Pape, receiving the cheque donation from Emma Willett – Sea FM

A reminder that Term 4 is a hat term. As a Sun Safe School we have a No Hat – No Play policy. Children must have a hat to play outside during recess and lunch times. If they do not have a hat, they will be asked to sit in a designated shade area. If you need to purchase a hat, we have plenty at the office.

I can’t believe we are at the end of another term. It has been a busy term and I have appreciated catching up with many of you. I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and will see you all in the new term.

Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids

Our HKFK focus for this week has been Good Winners/Good Losers. Our focus topics for the first two weeks of Term 4 will be Leadership and Being Positive.

Leadership

Who is a good leader and what do they do? How do we become good leaders? Is it the captain of the team? Is it the fastest runner? The best artist? The smartest kid in the grade? Leaders can be all sorts of people in all sorts of situations.

What does a great leader do? They:

  • inspire those around them with their “We Can Do It” attitude
  • can see the end goal
  • stand up for what they believe in
  • support people in their team
  • get people to work together to achieve a common goal
  • help everyone get started on a group work task
  • help sort out problems in a group.

What are the qualities of a great leader? They:

  • are sometimes the boss
  • are good listeners
  • are fair to everyone
  • treat others like they would like others to treat them

No-one is a leader all the time, but there is always an opportunity to be a leader. Have a think about the leaders in your grade, and whether or not you are a leader. Have a go at it. If you show all the Hilly Kid qualities of care, co-operation, respect and responsibility, then you can be a great leader, too.

Being Positive

Being Positive is a great attitude to have. Others enjoy being around positive people. Positive people do things. They take chances, they try their best, they don’t give up and they make the most of every situation. They enjoy most of what they do and help others have a good time as well. Certainly at times we need to look at the bad or the dangerous side of things and take them into consideration when making our decisions, but don’t get carried away with all the bad things. Enjoy the situations you are in and try to look at them positively, even when they are difficult. If nothing else, a tough situation will help you learn about how well you cope with hard times, and you might be able to plan better for next time.

Our Hilly Kid of the Week for “Being Resilient/Who Can Help Me?” was Autumn from 2-3P and for “Suggesting & Persuading” was Chloe from 5-6F. Congratulations, Autumn and Chloe!

Well done to our other class representatives:

Devonport Eisteddfod

Well, that’s it then……our time at the Devonport Eisteddfod is over for 2017.

When we go to the Eisteddfod, we are already winners because I know that we have done our best…but to be recognised as place getters is an added bonus!

Our P-1 Choir received an Honourable Mention in Class 130 - Infant School Choir, our Gr 1-2 Choir came 2nd in the same class. Our Primary Choir was awarded 1st place in Class 125A – Primary Choir, and also the GB & JZ Laurence Memorial for the highest points in this section!

To say that I am proud is an understatement….but, we didn’t achieve these outstanding results on our own. It was very much a team effort from our teaching and support staff in our great school.

To them I say “thank you very much”….and to you, the parents, who supported us by listening to your children sing around the house, by making sure that they were dressed in uniform (and I am sure you will agree it was worth the effort because we looked very smart!), or by being part of our cheer squad on the day, we also say “thank you”.

Our P-1 Choir was in The Advocate newspaper on Friday, 1st September, and our Primary Choir was in the paper on Saturday, 16th September. If you wish to purchase copies of these photos, they are available through Stallards Camera House website. Click on The Advocate Photos Online button. If you need assistance with that, then please don’t hesitate to ask!

Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes

Operation Christmas Child is turning out to be a great success again this year. Thank you to everyone who took the time to donate articles for the boxes. We have also had generous donations of knitted beanies and toys, which allowed each class to make a selection for their boxes. All donations of items need to be in to school by tomorrow, Friday, September 29. We will be finishing up the project, ready for the boxes to be delivered to the drop off point next month.

Don’t forget to return your order form for our toy catalogue fundraiser by Friday, October 20th. This will be the first Friday back after the school holidays.

Simply follow the instructions on the order form and return it, along with the payment, to the school office. Make an early start on your Christmas shopping!

Woolies Earn & Learn Stickers

As this campaign has now finished, please make sure that you bring all of your stickers/sticker sheets in to school by tomorrow, Friday 29th as we need to send our totals in next week. Thank you to everyone who took the time to collect and bring in stickers for us. We will let you know what we were able to receive for our stickers.

Walk-a-thon

Walktober is Australia’s walking month, so our annual walk-a-thon will be held early in Term 4. A sponsorship form for students will be sent home in Week 1.

This is a whole school walking event that encourages our Hilly Kids to lead active lives. Walking is an easy habit to develop and is a great way to get some exercise!

Persuasive writing

In term 3 1-2 B have been focusing on persuasive writing. To wrap up the unit the children worked in teams to make posters and then present the information to the rest of the class. All children showed great enthusiasm and everyone got a chance to share their ideas.

The aim of the task was for each team to brainstorm ways to persuade their audience that the animal they were representing would make a better pet than their opponent’s animal.

Using the six traits of writing as a guide to organise their pieces of writing each team used the following checklist:

  • We needed to have a bold beginning to catch our audience’s attention.
  • A mighty middle to provide as much information as we can about our animal and make it interesting!
  • Our writing needs an excellent ending to give our audience one lasting piece of information that they will remember.

As a class we compared and contrasted the posters. Team Dogs received: 3 stars for their introduction, 3 stars for their middle and two stars for their ending. Team Cats received: 3 stars for their introduction, 2 stars for their middle and 2 stars for their ending.

Chaplain’s Chat

This term some of our grade five and six children decided that the fiberglass cow needed a “make over”. The students have been eagerly painting the cow of a lunch time and have enjoyed taking ownership of this project, immensely. Hopefully I will have some photos of the finished product in a few weeks’ time.

After lunch on Mondays, the children who have been nominated for Hilly Kids awards the week prior are spending some reward time with me doing art and craft and other fun activities. This has been a wonderful opportunity for children across our school and from all age groups to interact with one another in a fun way. It has been really special to see our senior students play games with the younger ones and to see students who wouldn’t normally interact with one another get to know each other better. I have really enjoyed this time with the students and it is special for them to be rewarded for demonstrating our Hilly kids values.

I continue to be at school on a Monday and Tuesday, working across several classes and with individual students. If I can be of assistance to your child or your family, please feel free to contact me through the school office.

Drink Water, Not Sugar

Water contains no sugar and plain milk has only a small amount; therefore, they are the best choices for children. Compare the sugar content in a glass (250ml) of each of the drinks below! (1tsp = 4 grams of sugar).
