From the Principal
Wow – what a busy time of the year! Many things are happening in the next couple of weeks, so keep an eye on the calendar and keep checking our Facebook page.
A reminder that our annual Athletics Carnival will be happening this Friday, 8th December. As always, families are most welcome to come along and cheer the teams on. The School Association Committee has recently purchased more gazebos, so there will be extra shade for competitors and spectators.
Our school will again be entering a float in the Devonport Christmas Parade. All Primary Choir members and 4/5K have been invited to participate on the float. The theme for our float this year is ‘Unwrapping the Magic of Christmas’. The parade will begin at 6.30pm this Friday, 8th December. Make sure you come along and cheer us on loudly, as we pass by!
Classes have been very busy preparing for our upcoming Celebration Concert – with a matinee and evening performance on Thursday, 14th December. It is sure to be exciting - don’t forget to get your tickets!
Teachers met last week to discuss classes for 2018. As always, teachers have been carefully placing students in classes considering student need, friendship groups, family requests and class numbers across the school. You will be notified of your child’s class for next year, when classes are finalised. We are still finalising staffing for 2018, so this will also be announced, when completed.

Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids
Our HKFK focus for this week has been Rights. Our focus topics for the last two weeks will be Consequences and Celebrate.
Consequences
Whatever we choose to do, there will always be consequences. If you play outside in the rain, you will get wet, and your parents will probably not be happy. If you stay up late, the next morning you will not feel like getting up. Consequences are natural. The difficult part is trying to work out what the consequences are before you make your choices. It is a good idea to take a bit of time to THINK first! If you play football inside there is a good chance you’ll break something. That is not very smart. Better to play outside or in the park.
THINK about consequences before you act.
Celebrate
Congratulations to everyone on a great year and now it is time to celebrate and look forward to next year!
The last weeks of school presents us with many opportunities to celebrate. There will be class parties, excursions, fun, games and the final assembly. Join in all the celebrations and enjoy yourself. We have shared many good and a few difficult times over the year and it is now time to celebrate our achievements. Well done to all!
Our Hilly Kid of the Week for Fixing Things Up was Madison from 1-2B and for Setting Goals was Kiara from 4-5K. Congratulations, Madison and Kiara!

Hillcrest Athletics Carnival
Tomorrow, December 8th will be our school’s Athletics Carnival, weather permitting. Students will need to pack an extra drink and wear appropriate clothes for running. All parents and community members are welcome to attend to view the day’s running and novelty events. A program is attached below or is available from the school office.
Remember to wear your TEAM colours! Blue Gum – blue; Banksia – red and Wattle – green.
Students who apply zinc cream or coloured hairspray are asked to do so at home. Please do not bring any to school to re-apply during the day.

Walk-a-thon
Over $1300 was raised by our walk-a-thon. What a great effort! All students who raised money and returned their sponsorship forms went into a draw to win a prize pack. The Early Childhood winner was Maya from P-1P and the Primary winner was Kiara from 4-5K. Well done everyone!

Hilly Kitchen Rules
Thank you to those families who came along to our Hilly’s Kitchen Rules! We had lots of fun!
A big thank you must go out to Mrs Archer and Miss Duff who came along and helped out on the night and everyone who pitched in to help set up. We made Chilli ‘Non’ Carne and soft shell tacos.
Another Hilly’s Kitchen Rules will definitely happen in 2018! So, if you missed out this time – keep an eye out for the next one….
Thank you again for your participation and, if you have any feedback, it is most appreciated.

P-1 Parker
In Prep/1 Parker we have been busy learning about how to write a procedure. We have made fairy bread, decorated a biscuit and made aeroplanes. After this, we had to write the steps we took to make them. We all enjoyed eating our fairy bread and biscuits, they were yummy!
We have also been learning about Graphing during Mathematics. We have been learning about picture graphs and learning how to interpret the information. As a class we wanted to find out the most popular animal in the class. After we graphed the information we found out that cats were the most popular animal in our class.

Grade 6 Transition to Reece High
Today (29/11) the Grade 6s went to Reece. While we were at Reece we did MDT and cooking. In MDT we made a puzzle, which I really enjoyed making because it was challenging and interesting. In the puzzle you had to put the washers on the same rope which completely sounds easy, but it really is hard! In the end I got the rope all tied up in a knot, but when I took out the knot, the 2 washers were together! I really enjoyed cooking and MDT, it was a blast! – Monique
On Wednesday 29/11/2017 and it was also the most amazing transition to Reece High School I have EVER had. I did some woodwork and made a puzzle, which is EXTREMELY hard, then after that we did some cooking. My friends and I made some savoury toast, then we got to eat it and we also had a milkshake. I had a strawberry milkshake and it was delicious. I also had a lot of fun there and I hope I go there for high school. – Clayton

Cake Stall
Last week the Grade 5/6 students held a Cake Stall to raise money for the Grade 6 Celebration Tops we have been wearing. The amount of people who helped by baking cakes, selling them and coming along to purchase some delicious treats was simply amazing. At the end of the day we counted our profits, and found out that we had succeeded in passing our goal of raising $350. Thank you to everyone who helped us have a successful day. Here are a couple of letters written by the students to people who made a big contribution.
Dear Everyone,
Thank you Blair for helping in the cake stall and for handling the money. You have given your own time and effort to help us all raise money for the grade 6 leavers’ top. That is something you have achieved with your own time to help.
And I better not forget everyone else for helping in the cake stall for what they have done, like serving people treats that they would like. You have also contributed to helping raise money.
Thank you for helping. From Callum
Dear Customers and Helpers,
Thank you so much to everyone that contributed or bought a treat from our cake stall. It meant so much for our Grade 6’s. That money goes to our celebration/leavers tops. We had so much fun baking and selling the cakes and we hope you guys liked every delight we made.
Thank you to Mr Hortle and Mr Fenn for the amazing idea that you had thought of years ago, but today, it still brings a lot of people to the Cake Stall. We couldn’t have done it without everyone’s help, especially Mr Hortle . He let us use his room and most of his family baked some treats.
Thank you again. We hope you had a delicious time.
From Imogen in 5/6H

Move Well Eat Well
Fun family activity ideas:
- Instead of heading straight home, go by the park after school so kids aren’t tempted by the TV. Remember to take some healthy snacks & lots of water!
- Swimming is a great family activity. Head to the pool or, if you’re lucky, the beach. It’s also suitable for the whole family & a really important skill for the kids to have.
- Get the whole family washing the car. It’s a good way to burn off some energy!
- Get crafty! Make a kite together & then get outside to test fly it.
