NAPLAN
Students in grade 3 and 5 completed NAPLAN testing last week. Thanks to the staff who helped support students during testing. Reports regarding NAPLAN will be released later this year.
Zones of Regulation
During our Hilly Kids assembly on Monday I spoke with students regarding the ‘Zones of Regulation’. Jess Bellchambers has been working with the ‘zones’ since last year and her students are experts on how each zone can influence how they are feeling. Jess has also worked with staff regarding the zones. Look out for information and advice regarding the ‘Zones of Regulation’ in future newsletters.
Toast for Kids
The annual ‘Toast for Kids’ Charity Gala is fast approaching, happening on Saturday, June 2nd. Money raised goes towards school Breakfast Clubs and Books for Babies. Our school has been supported by this program since it started, so I encourage the community to get behind it. More details are below.
Children’s University
As you are no doubt aware, students in grade 3 have had the opportunity to be involved in Children’s University. We are now opening up the program to other grades. If your child is in grade 2 to grade 6, they are welcome to enquire about how the program works. Jesse Brennan from UTAS will be offering an information session for interested families. If you would like to know more, please contact the office. A date will be organised once interest has been gauged.

Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids
Our HKFK focus for this week has been ‘Having a Go’. Our focus topics for the next two weeks will be ‘Doing Your Best’ and ‘Fixing Things Up’.
Doing Your Best
It is important to do your best in everything that you do! It involves developing personal qualities of never giving up, having another go and being persistent if you don't achieve it the first time.
By always doing your best, you can feel proud, knowing that there was nothing more that you could have done to achieve your goal. It doesn't matter whether you come first or last, it’s more important to know that you did your very best in whatever you are doing!
Fixing Things Up
From time to time we make mistakes. At times we make these mistakes accidentally, at other times we are careless or, occasionally, we simply choose to do something we should not. Mistakes are a normal part of growing up and, if we learn from our mistakes, we end up better in the end.
Learning to fix things up after mistakes is a difficult thing to do, but it is so important. Fixing things up means repairing the damage you have caused to someone or something. It means you take responsibility for what has happened and, through your actions, prove to others and yourself that you know you have made a mistake and you want to improve the situation.
Be prepared to say sorry and then prove you are sorry by not letting it happen again. If something has been damaged, offer to fix it or replace it. Take responsibility for your actions and be the first to say sorry; don’t wait until you have to apologise or be told to by someone else.
Our Hilly Kid of the Week for ‘Being Positive’ was Taylor from P-1P and for ‘Seeing it Through’ was Mackenzie from P-1D. Our Aussie of the Month for April was Toby from 5-6F. Congratulations, Taylor, Mackenzie and Toby! Well done to our other class representatives.

Lunch Box Snacks Cooking Afternoon
A note will go home this week to invite families to come along for a fun afternoon of cooking some yummy lunch box treats! A great chance to learn some new recipes and stock up your child’s lunch box for the rest of the week! Spaces are limited, so be sure to RSVP as soon as possible. This event will take place on Tuesday, June 5th, from 3:00 – 4:30.
On Wednesday, May 9th, 10 parents came along to a session in the school library to learn about our TAG reading program. Mrs Mulcaster explained the process and then we watched an excellent demonstration. Parents then had the chance to have a go with their own child. The morning was lots of fun and will be run again in Term 3 if you are interested in coming along! If there is enough interest, we would be happy to run a session in the evening if that is an easier time for families.

DJSI Soccer
DJSI has been running an online competition for our junior members and their parents to become acquainted with the new DJSI website. The idea was to scan the new format to locate various soccer balls through the website. Those who located the correct number of soccer balls and placed their entry at the DJSI canteen won a soccer ball. Congratulations to Tahj for winning a DJSI soccer ball in the online competition.

Tuckerbox Tips
What about muesli bars?
Most muesli, breakfast or cereal bars provide a small amount of fibre from oats and dried fruit but many are high in fat and sugar and are best eaten occasionally. Try some of the following alternatives to muesli bars in your child’s lunchbox:
- Fruit or vegetable scones, pikelets or muffins
- Fruit bread or fruit buns
- Weetbix or Vitabrits spread with vegemite and topped with cheese.
What about dried fruit?
Dried fruit is included as part of the fruit food group and is a good source of vitamins and fibre. It is very high in natural sugar (energy) and is more likely to stick to teeth than fresh fruit. For these reasons, only eat small amounts of dried fruit and combine it with tooth-friendly foods such as cheese and vegetables or cereal and milk.

News from Our School Nurse
Hand Hygiene
This time of the year the school and home environment are havens for coughs, colds and upset tummies. To reduce the risk of spreading these illnesses’ staff and parents should encourage the children to wash their hands frequently.
The most important times are:- after going to the toilet. Before, during and after preparing food. Before eating food, after coughing, sneezing and blowing noses and after touching animals.
POSITIVE PARENTING – SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN
“There is no such thing as a perfect parent. So just be a real one” (Sue Atkins)
School age children are continuously learning about the world around them. They may have a great deal of questions that they would like answered. At this age that they will start to have their own views and may become more challenging and push the boundaries.
Remember all children are different and behaviour will depend on how old they are, their personality, if they have any health problems and their level of understanding.
Here are a few tips that might make it easier to manage this challenging behaviour:
- Children learn by watching others. If they see you acting in a certain way they will tend to copy.
- Children will test the limits. This is how they learn what is right and what is wrong – ensure they have regular routines and know what is expected of them.
- Recognise good behaviour and praise the child – saying how well they have done, you are really pleased with what they have done and so on.
- Try to ignore unacceptable behaviour. If the child gets attention for unacceptable behaviour they are more likely to continue with it. Praise the good behaviour and ignore the bad behaviour.
