Swimming & Water Safety
Students in grade 3 -6 have been busy undertaking the Swimming and Water Safety Program at the Ulverstone pool, for the last two weeks. We appreciate the difficulties faced in ensuring swimming gear is dry and ready to go each day. Thanks to all families who have been making sure that everything is prepared. Thanks also go to staff who have been helping out at the pool each day.
3-Way Conferences
3-way conference booking sheets were sent home on Monday. 3-way conferences are an important time for students, families and teachers to meet together to discuss progress, as well as plan for future learning. We would appreciate catching up with all families, so don’t forget to send your preferred times back to the office. 3-way conferences will be held in the week beginning 25th June. Families of kinder students will be meeting from the 12th -15th June.
Student reports for grades P-6 will be sent home on Friday, 22nd June. Please spend the time going through the report with your child. If you have any questions regarding your child’s report, feel free to discuss with your child’s teacher.

Pirate Day Friday – TOMORROW!
We invite students to participate in “Pirate Day Friday” tomorrow, Friday, June 8th. Dress up like a pirate and bring a gold coin donation to school.
It’s the 4th annual “Pirate Day Friday”, a national fundraiser that encourages kids, office workers and whole towns to dress up and give a gold coin donation for the privilege.
All funds raised from the campaign, in collaboration between The Adventurers and The Kids’ Cancer Project, are directed to funding vital childhood brain cancer research.
Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids
Our HKFK focus for this week has been ‘Fixing Things Up”. Our focus topics for the next two weeks will be ‘Setting Goals’ and ‘Rights’.
Setting Goals
Setting Goals is a very helpful strategy. Setting your goals will help you to do your best. It means working out what you want to achieve before you start. If you do this well then you should have some idea of how you can achieve what you want.
When setting your goals try to make them realistic – in other words, try to aim for something that you can achieve and most importantly aim for something you really want to achieve. Don’t be concerned with the goals of others around you. Work out what you want and go for it.
Rights
We quite often hear the word rights. So what are they? People talk about the right to an education or the right to vote. Basically it means that people are entitled to something and that those around them, or those in authority, should make sure they get what they are entitled to.
In our school children have a number of rights:
- The right to learn.
- The right to be safe.
- The right to be respected.
It is everyone’s responsibility to make sure that these rights are respected. How can you do that?
- Make sure that you help those around you learn by being a good learner yourself. Concentrate on your work and spend your time productively in class.
- In the playground play safely and look after those around you. Be friendly and this will help others feel safe.
- Respect all the people in our school. Think about how you behave with them.
- Look after the rights of others and your rights will be looked after as well.
Our Hilly Kid of the Week for ‘Having a Go’ was Bradley from P-1D and for ‘Doing Your Best’ was Mia from 2-3P. Congratulations, Bradley and Mia! Well done to our other class representatives.

Reports & 3-Way Conferences
On Friday, June 22, students from Prep to Grade 6 will receive their mid-year reports outlining their progress in learning. The following week, Monday June 25th to Friday June 29th we will be holding our 3-way (parent – student – teacher) meetings. P-1D, P-1P & 1-2B will also have time slots available on Monday, July 2nd and Tuesday July 3rd as they are unavailable for part of the previous week. Forms were sent home on Monday of this week asking families for their date/time preferences. Please number more than one box with your preferences. Remember to return these forms as soon as possible as those who are in first will be more likely to get their first preference.
Our Kinder reporting has a different time frame with the Kinder Development Check discussed with families at meetings to be held next week. All Kinder families should have received a note with further information.

Open Classrooms/Biggest Morning Tea/Simultaneous Storytime
In week 4 we enjoyed a wonderful morning with families. Open classrooms were a great success and we were so pleased to see many family members enjoying spending time in their child’s classroom. The parent Biggest Morning Tea was so busy that we almost ran out of food! Thank you so much to everyone who came along and donated. We raised $377 for the Cancer Council! A big thank you to Mrs Aherne and her helpers in the canteen, as well as the Student Council members and Boja Distributors who generously donated the milk for both this event and our Walk Safely to School Day. It was certainly a busy and fun-filled morning!
Later that morning we all enjoyed listening to Lee and Jess from SeaFM read the story ‘Hickory Dickory Dash’ for National Simultaneous Storytime.

Tuckerbox Tips
Try these ways to ’green’ up muffins at morning tea:
- Go for a fruit or veggie based recipe - blueberry, raspberry, carrot, apple, pear or zucchini.
- Think smaller - consider making mini muffins or smaller cupcakes
- Swap the frosting, icing or cream for a dusting of icing sugar, cocoa or sliced fruit
- Swap some ingredients in the recipe:
- Flour - add more fibre by using half wholemeal flour and half white flour
- Fats & oils - swap butter for margarine and use mono or polyunsaturated oil (eg canola or sunflower) to reduce the saturated or ‘bad’ fat
- Dairy - choose reduced fat rather than full cream
- Sugar - reduce the amount by aiming for a ratio of 1/2c (or less) sugar to 2c flour

Move Well Eat Well
Encourage Eating Before Sport
It’s important to eat and drink before playing sport. Having a meal a few hours before sport will make sure it is well digested before the game starts. If your child is playing sport in the morning, make sure they have a good breakfast to get them through the game. Try these ideas:
- Breakfast cereal with milk & fruit
- Yoghurt & fruit
- Toast, English muffin or crumpet with spread
- Baked beans or spaghetti on toast
- Smoothie with yoghurt or fruit
If your child suffers from nerves, it may be difficult to get them to eat before playing sport. It’s still important to try to get them to eat to make sure they have enough energy to get through a game.
