From the Principal
It is great to see so many families organise a time for 3 way conferences, starting next week. It is not too late to make an appointment, so please contact the office to organise a time to see your child’s teacher. We look forward to seeing you next week.
Our School Association Committee has started work on the Respectful School Volunteers and Visitor Behaviour Policy and Process. This documentation is a required part of the new Education Act and will have specific expectations regarding adult volunteer and visitor behaviour, including requirements for volunteers to have a current Registration to Work with Vulnerable People card. The new policy will be distributed once finalised. If you have any questions, please contact the school office.
Zones of Regulation
Families might start hearing their children talking about their ‘green zone’ or ‘red zone’. This is part of the Zones of Regulation, a new program being implemented across the school. The zones are designed to teach self-regulation, with the framework providing strategies to teach students how to become more aware of and independent in controlling their emotions and impulses and solve problems. More information will be provided about each zone, so look out for this in future newsletters.

Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids
Our HKFK focus for this week has been ‘Rights”. Our focus topics for the next two weeks will be ‘Consequences’ and ‘Leadership’.
Consequences
Whatever we choose to do, there will always be consequences. If you play outside in the rain, you will get wet, and your parents will probably not be happy. If you stay up late, the next morning you will not feel like getting up. Consequences are natural. The difficult part is trying to work out what the consequences are before you make your choices. It is a good idea to take a bit of time to THINK first! If you play football inside there is a good chance you’ll break something. That is not very smart. Better to play outside or in the park. THINK about consequences before you act.
Leadership
Who is a good leader and what do they do? How do we become good leaders? Is it the captain of the team? Is it the fastest runner? The best artist? The smartest kid in the grade? Leaders can be all sorts of people in all sorts of situations.
What does a great leader do? They:
- inspire those around them with their “We Can Do It” attitude
- can see the end goal
- stand up for what they believe in
- support people in their team
- get people to work together to achieve a common goal
- help everyone get started on a group work task
- help sort out problems in a group.
What are the qualities of a great leader? They:
- are sometimes the boss
- are good listeners
- are fair to everyone
- treat others like they would like others to treat them
No-one is a leader all the time, but there is always an opportunity to be a leader. Have a think about the leaders in your grade and whether or not you are a leader. Have a go at it. If you show all the Hilly Kid qualities of Care, Co-operation, Respect and Responsibility then you can be a great leader too.
Our Hilly Kid of the Week for ‘Fixing Things Up’ was Bryce from 5-6F and for ‘Setting Goals’ was Cooper from 3-BT. Our Aussie of the Month for May was Torrah. Congratulations, Bryce, Cooper and Torrah! Well done to our other class representatives.

Pirate Day Friday
About Pirate Day Friday
Pirate Day Friday is an annual national event created to generate awareness and much needed funds for children’s brain cancer. All funds raised are allocated to research projects across Australia through The Adventurers and The Kids' Cancer Project.
Hillcrest Primary School students and staff took part in Pirate Day Friday on 8 June. Our community raised $265 for The Kids’ Cancer Project.
Aaarrhhh me hearties! Thank ya fer yer pieces of eight!

End of Term Assembly
All families are invited to our End of Term assembly at 2pm on Friday, July 6 in the GP Hall. If your child is to receive an award, you will be notified earlier in the week.
Lost Property Basket
Our lost property basket is overflowing with various items such as drink bottles, jackets, jumpers, etc. Please check the basket if your child is missing anything. Ask at the office if it is something small as we keep those items here. All items not claimed by the end of the term will be either donated to an op shop, or put into our second-hand uniform collection.
Reports & 3-Way Conferences
Tomorrow, June 22, students from Prep to Grade 6 will receive their mid-year reports outlining their progress in learning. Next week, Monday June 25th to Friday June 29th we will be holding our 3-way (parent – student – teacher) meetings. P-1D, P-1P & 1-2B will also have meetings on Monday, July 2nd and Tuesday July 3rd as they are unavailable for part of the previous week. Forms were sent home on Monday of this week confirming family times for the conferences. Where possible we have given families their first preferences. Forms which were returned late may not have been accommodated quite as easily.
Please ensure that you are on time as other parents also have meetings scheduled after you.
Lift News
In week 6 twenty families enjoyed an afternoon of cooking delicious lunch box snacks! We made pizza scrolls, easy bliss balls, muesli bars, ‘sushi’ style wraps, hummus and yummy cheese, ham and vegetable skewers! We had a fun filled afternoon and lots of children (and adults!) discovered a new food that they liked and will now be cooking at home. Keep an eye out in the next few newsletters, as some of the recipes will be featured in the canteen section.

For family members who do not have their Working With Vulnerable People card – Please come to the library and use our facilities to do this and I will be there to support you. Remember if you wish to attend class excursions with your children, you are required to have one. The library is open to parents on a Wednesday morning from 8:30 until 9:30, or a time before or after school on a different day can be easily arranged.

If you are available to help pack orders first thing that morning, please leave your name at the school office. Orders can be collected after 11am on that day. Please ensure that you collect your orders by the close of business as we do not have the capacity to refrigerate items.

Tuckerbox Tips
Top Alternative to Chips
Chips and crisps are made from potatoes, but prepared by cooking in oil. They are high in fat and salt and best eaten occasionally. Try some of the following alternatives to chips in your child’s lunchbox:
- Nibble mix with plain popcorn, dried fruit and breakfast cereal
- Rice cakes, corn thins or rice crackers
- Wholemeal or multigrain crispbreads, eg Ryvita or Vita-Weats
- Mini toasts or grissini sticks
- Homemade pita chips - cut pita bread into triangles, sprinkle with grated cheese and bake in a moderate oven until crispy.

Move Well Eat Well
Children who are encouraged and supported in their game playing will gain for the rest of their lives and will be more inclined to stick with healthy sporting and lifestyle activities as they grow older.
- Support your children’s choice of activities. Some kids go for organised sports such as netball and basketball. Other children prefer less structured activities like bike riding.
- Give gifts that encourage activities. For birthdays and Christmas give bats, Frisbees, bikes, skateboards and skipping ropes. Make it easy for your children to stay active.
- Lock up the car and leave it at home for short journeys, like trips to the shops. Take a bike ride, go rollerblading or walk there instead!

NWPSSA Cross Country
Our team had a great day at the recent NWPSSA Cross Country event in Ulverstone!
1-2 Bellchambers
What’s been happening in 1-2B during Term 2?
Well lots actually! Our focus in writing this term has been word choice. We have looked at ways we can used a range of different words to join two ideas together. These are called conjunctions. We have also used lots of ‘wow words’ in our writing to make the sentence more interesting and fun to read. We have had lots of fun exploring rhythm and rhyme.
To help us reach our goals in reading, we have been revising all the reading strategies and noticing how often we use two or more strategies to decode words in our text. It has also been lovely to have some parent helpers come in and help out our class in tag reading.
We have used the Zones of Regulations daily to help us to become more aware of our own emotions and the way our emotions can impact others around us. We even shared some of the tools we use in the Zones of Regulations at a Hilly Kids assembly.
Fairy Godmothers Market
The Fairy Godmothers is a registered not for profit organisation whose mission is to assist the Tasmanian community and families that have children with disabilities, special needs and medical conditions.
