From the Principal
Welcome back to term 3! I trust everyone had a good holiday and are ready to get on with the work ahead. I have enjoyed catching up with many students, hearing about their adventures over the holiday period.
As you are no doubt aware, Reece High School will be holding their annual information evening, next Thursday 9th August from 6.30 pm. This is a great opportunity for families with a student in grade 6 to find out more about the school and take a tour of the facilities. If you require further information, please feel free to contact Reece high School on 6420 8100.
A reminder that our School Association Committee meeting has been postponed due to the Reece High information evening. The meeting will now take place August 23rd in the staffroom at 7 pm. We will be doing further work on the Respectful School Volunteer and Visitor Behaviour Policy and Process. If you have any questions regarding the School Association Committee, please feel free to contact the office.
It was a pleasure to meet with Senator Steve Martin who presented the school with a cheque for $600 to support our school breakfast program. Steve has been a long supporter of breakfast clubs in the Devonport area through his Toast for Kids Annual Gala Ball. On behalf of the hungry children who enjoy breakfast each day, thank you to Steve and all supporters who provided much needed funds for this program.

Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids
Our HKFK focus for this week has been ‘Group Decision Making’. Our focus topics for the next two weeks will be ‘Negotiating’ and ‘Being Assertive’.
Negotiating – Why learn this skill?
If you want someone to do something for you or to give you permission to do something, the best way to get what you want is to negotiate. Negotiation involves trying to get what you want by first working out what the other person wants and trying to give it to them. This way is called a “win-win” way of negotiation because both people get something they want. It is different from a “win-lose” approach where someone gets what they want and the other person doesn’t get anything.
Negotiating needs to be planned and each side has to complete their side of the bargain. For example: you may want a ride to footy training so you negotiate with mum to give you a ride and in return you will put the rubbish out. If you do not keep your part of the bargain, you won’t be trusted the next time and the relationship suffers.
Remember: You are more likely to get what you want and keep friends if the other person gets something too
Do:
- Decide what you want
- Think about what the other person might want in return (eg they might want to be sure that something they lend you will be looked after)
- Pick a good time to ask
- Use a friendly voice
- If you can’t work out what they want in return, ask them directly
- If the other person won’t agree with what you want, accept that. You won’t always get what you want.
- Keep your side of the bargain.
Don’t:
- Don’t ask at an inconvenient time (eg when the other person is busy or talking to someone else)
- Don’t use a grizzly, whingeing voice
- Don’t threaten, sulk, insult or get angry if you don’t get what you want.
Being Assertive - Standing up for yourself
The best way is:
- Tell them to stop annoying you or firmly ignore their behaviour and walk away from them
- Speak in a clear and firm, not angry, voice
- Stand tall
- Look into their eyes firmly, but not in a threatening way, when speaking to others
- Stay in control of yourself
Don’t:
- Give in to others when you don’t want to
- Let other people continue to do bad things to you
- Talk quietly, mumble or speak hesitantly
- Cry, sulk or sob without trying to deal with the problem yourself first
- Look down at the ground when you are speaking
- Stand small as if you are trying to hide.
Our Hilly Kid of the Week for ‘Leadership’ was Sarita from 5-6HB and for ‘Sharing’ was Logan from 5-6F. Our Aussie of the month for June was Jordan from 5-6HB. Congratulations, Sarita, Logan and Jordan! Well done to our other class representatives.

Reminders
Before/After School Supervision
Our school hours are 8:25am – 2:45pm. It is important that students are not at school outside of these hours as there is no supervision for them. Please do not bring your children to school too early and do not be late collecting them after school.
Unsupervised students may engage in dangerous play or end up in dangerous locations such as busy carparks and laybys. Parents are responsible for their children outside school hours unless they are meant to be in the after school care room.
School office hours are 8:30am – 4pm. Please remember to use the front office door as the back door is for staff and deliveries only.
Dropping Off/Picking Up From the Layby
Please remember that the layby at the front of the school is intended as a drop-off/pick-up area only. It is NOT a standing/parking area for cars. We ask that you support us in our efforts to ensure that the buses are not delayed by cars stopped in the layby.
Also, please remember to travel slowly in the school layby and be aware of other students, both crossing the road and getting out of other cars. For your child’s safety please be sure that they exit your vehicle from the footpath side. Please be aware that the staff car park is for staff and official visitors only. Families are not to use the car park as a drop-off/pick-up area.
Outstanding Levies
All outstanding levies should be paid in full by now. If you feel you may be eligible for the Student Assistance Scheme please see the office staff for an application form.
If you are experiencing financial problems which are preventing you from paying your levies, please contact the School Business Manager as soon as possible or make a part payment as a matter of urgency. Please be aware that debts which continue to remain outstanding will be referred to the Department of Education for follow-up action.
Scholastic Book Club Orders
Please remember that book club orders are due back to school by Thursday, August 9th. Late orders are not able to be processed.
Soccer News
Over the School holidays a group of soccer players represented Hillcrest at a Devonport Strikers match. Our students ‘walked’ the Devonport Strikers and Kingborough Lions players onto the field and had a kick at half time. Many thanks to Andrew and Sam for their support in making this experience a great opportunity for our students.
No Regular Roster August 4th
DJSI has rostered no normal Saturday morning games to be played on the weekend of the 4th of August. This weekend is set aside for the six-a- side competition. Hillcrest has nominated the following teams: Open 6, Under 11, Under 10 and an Under 9 team. A confirmation note and relevant information, including rosters, have been sent home with players who have been selected for this event.

Lift News
Welcome back to what looks like being another busy term of learning here at Hillcrest!
As Hillcrest’s new Lift Coordinator, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Rosemarie Baker, but I’m perhaps better known by students as Baker-sensei, the Japanese teacher! My association with Hillcrest goes back to my first relief teaching days here in 2002. Since then I’ve also been a class teacher with Japanese being my main role for a few years now. I feel very privileged to be able to work with you, the parents/carers of an amazing group of children in an amazing school.
My Lift days are Wednesday and Thursday each week.
Save these Dates!
Wednesday August 22: Book week character parade. More information to come.
Wednesday August 29: Book week activity day where students’ Book Week inspired art and craft items will be on display after school. It promises to be a fantastic display again!
Please remember …. The library is open every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday before and after school for home reader borrowing. Why not also borrow a game from the huge selection available? There’s something for all ages.
For family members who do not have their Working With Vulnerable People card – Please come to the library and use our facilities to do this and I will be there to support you. Remember if you wish to attend class excursions with your child/ren, you are required to have one. The library is open to parents on a Wednesday morning from 8:30 until 9:30, or a time before or after school on a different day can be easily arranged.

Fathers’ Day Stall
The Fathers’ Day Stall will be held on Tuesday, August 28th. The purpose of the stall is to give each child an opportunity to buy a small gift for their father for Fathers’ Day. It is also a School Association fundraising event.
Parents are asked to buy or make a small gift to the value of $3 and send it to school by Monday, August 27th. Please do not wrap gifts. Your child will put the present in a box in the classroom and tick their name on the list on the box. Every child who donates to the stall will go into the draw to win a gift for Dad.
On the day of the stall please send your child to school with $3 to purchase a gift for Dad. If you do not want your child to participate, please tell him/her beforehand. Donations of wrapping paper are also needed. Offers of assistance to help run the stall on the Tuesday from 9-10:30am would be most welcome. Please leave your name at the school office.

Tuckerbox Tips
Sometimes it can be hard to think of something to make for lunchboxes. Try to include foods from as many of the food groups as you can. Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Chicken & chopped vegetables in pita bread
- Lean roast beef, mustard & lettuce on wholegrain bread
- Pasta with chicken, 3 bean mix & mixed vegetables
- Leftover homemade pizza
- Chicken, tomato, lettuce & cucumber in a wrap
- Fill a container with cherry tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, egg, cheese cubes & a small bread roll
- Vegemite, cheese & chopped celery in a wholemeal roll

Move Well Eat Well
August is fruit and vegetable month
Handy hints to get the family eating more fruit and vegetables:
- Keep a bowl of fresh fruit handy and bite-sized vegetables, such as cherry tomatoes, baby carrots and snow peas in the fridge to grab as a quick snack
- Vegetables taste different raw and cooked. Why not let children taste vegetables raw, steamed, microwaved or stir-fried to get them to say which they like best?
- Involve children in choosing fruit and vegetables to buy and also in cutting up and peeling them.
- Try adding fruit (fresh, dried or canned) to breakfast cereals
- Make smoothies by blending soft fruit, such as strawberries or bananas, with milk and yoghurt
- Add vegetables to favourite foods such as pizza toppings, pasta, sauces, pie fillings or cakes (eg grated carrot, zucchini or beetroot)
- Make vegetable pikelets or mini-pizzas using rolls or muffins and use them in school lunches the next day
- Include vegetables in soups, eg pumpkin, minestrone or potato
