From the Principal
It is great to see a few families registering for Children’s University for 2019. There are still plenty of passports available, so, if you wish your child to get involved, please contact the office. A reminder that, for those students continuing with their passports this year, you will need to fill out a 2019 permission form. Please contact the office for more information.
We will be having some staff changes coming into the end of term 1. Prue Bezemer has needed to take time off for family reasons. She will be on leave until the end of term 3. Her position is currently being advertised and I will keep the community informed regarding arrangements. We are hoping this is not too disruptive and wish Prue all the best.
A reminder that our first School Association Committee meeting for 2019 will be held tonight, 14th March at 7.00pm in the school staffroom. Any community member is more than welcome to attend. Hope to see you there!

Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids
What is Bullying
Our current fortnightly Hilly Kids focus topic is “What is Bullying?”
No one has the right to make others feel unhappy, sad, frightened or not want to come to school to learn. We will look at the types of bullying behaviours that we do not accept at Hillcrest Primary School like:
- Name calling
- Deliberately hurting others
- Using put down type comments and
- Deliberately excluding others.
We all have a responsibility to put an end to any bullying type behaviour by letting people know it’s not okay and telling someone about it, like a friend, your family or a teacher. The website below has many great support resources too.
http://bullyingnoway.com.au/
We recognise that many students are still developing their social skills in how to deal with problems and interact in appropriate ways with others. We continue to support our students to learn from their mistakes and to make a commitment to ensure that they do not make the same mistakes again.
Our Hilly Kid for ‘Respecting the Environment’ week was Taylah from P-1P and our Aussie of the month for February was Eric from 5-6F. Congratulations, Taylah and Eric!
Well done to our other class representatives:

Kinder Bellchambers
Growth in Kinder B
As an overarching inquiry this year our Kinders will be exploring the concept of ‘Growth’. So far we have used a ‘talking tub’ to investigate different items that can represent growth.
The children found this interesting and we discussed together similarities and differences between each piece.
To start with, the children were able to paint a picture of something they knew could grow.
Of course the children themselves have already shown such a huge amount of growth as they have transitioned into school life! It is amazing to see the friendships, independence and resilience these little people are developing.

Hillcrest Tuckerbox
Vegetables and legumes (e.g. kidney beans, chickpeas and lentils) are a good source of vitamins, minerals and fibre. It is important that children eat a rainbow of different coloured vegetables every day.
Add vegetables to a range of different foods in your child’s lunchbox to keep it interesting. To increase vegetables in lunchboxes try these tips:
- Vegetable sticks with dip
- Vegetables added to muffins, pikelets, scones & mini pizzas
- Salad in a container –celery, carrot & cucumber sticks, cherry tomatoes, snow peas
- Pasta salad or coleslaw
- Frittata or quiche

Move Well Eat Well
Water contains no sugar and plain milk has only a small amount; therefore, they are the best choices for children. Compare the sugar content in a glass (250ml) of each of the drinks below! (1tsp = 4 grams of sugar).
