From the Principal
As you are no doubt aware, we currently have some building works happening at the school. We are having a new access path constructed to the oval, which I am sure will be appreciated by all members of our school community. As the construction area is fenced off, we request that community members enter through the gate near the Kindergarten please. A reminder that bicyclists will need to dismount when inside school grounds. We hope that the path will be completed soon and thank you for your patience.
Prue Bezemer has taken some leave until the end of term 3. After advertising her AST position, I can announce that Jaime-Lea Duff was the successful candidate. Congratulations Jaime, I am sure you will do a great job! The replacement teacher for Miss Duff’s class will be announced as soon as possible.

Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids
Taking Turns
Our current fortnightly Hilly Kids focus topic is “Taking Turns”.
Almost every day at school we need to take our turn. Sometimes it is in the classroom and other times outside in the playground. In the class we may need to wait for our turn to see the teacher or to go on the computer. We need to take our turn at the canteen or for the drinking fountain. In games we need to take our turns to bat, to bowl, to pick teams and all sorts of things. Remember:
Do:
- wait patiently,
- allow others to finish before you start,
- give others a chance to have their go.
Don’t:
- push and shove,
- push in,
- always have to be first.
Our Hilly Kid for the ‘What is Bullying?’ topic was Ariarnah from P-1P. Congratulations, Ariarnah!
Well done to our other class representatives:

Soccer Registrations
Ticket to Play Voucher
Please note: if you have a Ticket to Play voucher you will not be able to enter it when you register your child for soccer online. You are asked to ignore the voucher at the end of the online registration process as the system only accepts NSW vouchers.
Simply complete your registration and bring your voucher to the school office. We MUST sight the voucher number AND your Centrelink Healthcare/Pension card that has the player’s name on it. Devonport Junior Soccer will then apply your voucher number to the registration when they reconcile payments.
Please remember that, even if you pay your registration ($65) online, you still need to pay $10 at the school office for top hire and bond.

Ride to School Lunchtime Ride
It was great to see 55 cyclists enjoying their lunchtime break by being active by cycling around the oval. Fun in this session was highlighted by the way cyclists watched where they were riding, slowing down by using brakes when approaching other riders and general respect for each other as they rode around.
Parents do need to check their child’s bike before cycling. The ABCD checklist is:
A – Air in the tyres
B – Brakes are fully working
C – Chain is not too loose or too greasy
D – Drop (when you lift the bike up and drop it on to the wheels, there
should be NO clunking or strange noises)
This check is the way to go to start a safe ride.

2/3 Peace
2/3 Peace and What Harmony Day Means to Us
This last week we have been exploring the meaning of Harmony Day and researching why celebrating this might be important to us. This is important to our learning in HaSS.
Melanie: Harmony Day is all about sharing things, respecting differences and diversity of others. It is celebrating culture.
Tazdeed: Harmony Day is all about respecting differences. Understanding kindness. Love and Peace. Wearing something orange.
We discovered new vocabulary like ‘diversity’, ‘culture’ and ‘inclusive’ and were able to connect with words like ‘kindness’, ‘peace’ and ‘harmony’.
As ‘Learners as Researchers’ we found out three facts about Australia and its diverse culture:
- more than 70 Indigenous languages are spoken in Australia
- apart from English, the most common languages spoken in Australia are Mandarin, Arabic, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Italian, Greek, Tagalog/Filipino, Hindi, Spanish and Punjabi
- nearly half (49 per cent) of Australians were born overseas or have at least one parent who was
As a class we created our diverse poster of different hands all around Australia with the idea that we are all special and different, and that we all belong.
Three things we agree upon that we can do to help keep Australia peaceful and happy are:
- getting along with all
- respect everyone
- make everyone feel welcome.

Move Well Eat Well
Making better takeaway choices
Takeaway food can cost a lot and is often high in fat and salt and low in fibre and vitamins. Having takeaway food sometimes is ok but try to buy healthier choices.
- Pizza - have more vegetable toppings , eg pineapple, capsicum, mushroom & tomato
- Sandwiches - choose salad sandwiches & rolls with ham, roast beef, chicken, egg or cheese. Try different types of bread, eg mountain bread, grain, wholemeal, bagels, etc.
- Chicken - choose bbq chicken, remove the skin and have it with bread & salad instead of chips
- Fish - have grilled fish with rice, bread & salad rather than chips
- Italian - choose tomato-based dishes. Try ones with different ingredients & a variety of vegetables
- Hot potatoes - try vegetable toppings such as beans & salads. Limit sour cream, cheese, butter & bacon.
