From the Principal
As you are no doubt aware, NAPLAN online will begin next week for students in grade 3 and 5. The students will undertake tests in Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language and Numeracy. All tests will be completed online using school iPads, apart from grade 3 writing, which is paper based. I encourage all students to do their best and remind them that this is an important test to inform the school and community about their learning. If you have any questions, please contact the office.
A big congratulations go to Myha Peterson, who won the under 12 Judo competition held in Ulverstone on the 28th April. Myha is now the Under 12 Girls State Champion. Well done, Myah! We are all very proud of your achievement.

Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids
Including Others
Our current fortnightly Hilly Kids focus has been ‘Using Appropriate Language’. Our topic for the next fortnight will be ‘Including Others’.
Including others in your games and activities makes everyone feel good. It means that you are generous and willing to share your time with others and care about their feelings. If you include others in your games they are more likely to include you when you are looking for someone to play with or talk to.
If you are not already doing so, try to look around and see if there are others who might like to join in. Sometimes they might not even ask to join in, but just stand close by - try to include them. If you see someone standing off alone – try to include them. If there is a new student at school – try to include them. If someone is being teased – try to include them. There are always opportunities to include others so try to be the person who sets a good example to your fellow students by being kind and helpful and including others in your activities.
Anzac Ceremony
On Thursday 25th April, Hillcrest Primary School was represented at the Devonport ANZAC parade by 2019 Student Councillors Toby, Maya, Matilda, Yazmyn and Gemma, who marched in the parade and laid a wreath at the cenotaph. Lest We Forget.
Scholastic Book Club
Please remember that Scholastic Book Club orders are due in by Friday, May 17th. If you order and pay by the LOOP system, these orders must also be completed by that same day.
Entertainment Book – Return or Pay
It is time to make your decision about whether or not to purchase the 2019/2020 Entertainment Book which was sent home with students before the holidays.
If you do not intend to purchase the Entertainment Book, please return it to the school office as soon as possible. If it is not returned we will assume that you are purchasing your copy and you will be invoiced for payment.
Please consider purchasing the book as there are great savings to be made and you will be supporting the School Association’s fundraising efforts. Our school receives $13 for every book sold. The book contains hundreds of vouchers with up to 50% off and 2-for-1 offers for restaurants, cafes, attractions, activities, retailers and hotel accommodation. There are pages and pages of offers to enjoy all year long and great discounts for car hire, theme park entry and hotel accommodation right across Australia! There are lots of new cafes and restaurants included this year. They also make a great gift!

Storytime in the Library
Starting this term staff members will sometimes be in the library after school to read and share one of their favourite books. Mr Pape has kindly offered to be the first to share his favourite picture book, Wombat Stew. Date: Thursday, 16th May. Time: 2:45 – 3:15pm. See you there!
Open Morning and Biggest Morning Tea-Wed. May 22nd from 9am
Wednesday, 22nd May is the annual National Simultaneous Storytime event. This year’s book is Alpacas with Maracas. On that day we will be holding an open classroom morning from 9:00 – 10:15 am and invite families to come along and join in their child/ren’s learning. Later in the day, Lee and Jess from Sea FM will read the book to all our students.
After the open classroom, families are invited to go to the area outside the canteen at 10:20am to enjoy a special morning tea to raise money for the Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea. For a donation of $3 you will receive an instant coffee, tea or Milo and a plate of treats or, for $5, you will receive a Leaping Goat coffee or hot chocolate and a plate of treats! Our Student Councillors are looking forward to running this and serving you a delicious morning tea.
Unfortunately May 22nd is not a Kinder B day, but students are more than welcome to attend with a parent/carer.
Keep an eye out for an invitation from your child/ren! We look forward to seeing you at school.
Families who do not have their Working with Vulnerable People registration – You are welcome to come to the library and use our facilities to apply for this and I will be there to support you should you need help. Remember: if you wish to attend a class excursion with your child/ren or participate in parent help or coaching in any way, you are required to have one.

P-1 Parker
This year our class has become buddies with Mrs Kelly’s 4/5 class. The buddy program has been extremely beneficial so far and the children are thoroughly enjoying it. The buddy program has assisted the younger students with the commencement of the new school year and it has promoted social and support networks for the children.
Every Friday afternoon we meet with our buddy class after the Hilly Kids assembly. Every session begins with our buddies reading to each other, followed by activities we have planned for that week. Last Friday, May 3, we met with our buddies and shared various stories with each other, followed by Mrs Kelly’s 4/5 students taking on some leadership opportunities to teach the prep/1 students how to navigate Reading Eggs. The students had a wonderful time working with each other.

Fundraising Thankyou
A big thankyou to everyone who has supported our fundraising events lately by selling and buying tickets in our Easter raffle and coming along to our Family Market.
This year our Easter raffle raised $1069 and our Market raised over $2000! What an amazing effort!

Tuckerbox Tips
To make sandwiches more interesting, vary the breads and fillings. Try some of the following ideas:
- Use different types of breads. Try wholemeal, high fibre white, sourdough, pita, bagels or wraps
- Try crackers and crispbreads for a change
- Add different vegetables in different ways: grated carrot, finely sliced cucumber, celery and different types of lettuce
- Use different protein fillings instead of ham and chicken. Try roast beef, sliced turkey and sliced egg
- Add different flavours. Try mustard, small amounts of Vegemite, mayonnaise, chutney and hummus. You can also add herbs and spices such as chopped parsley, chives or curry powder. Don’t add salt!

The time children spend sitting and watching television or playing electronic games (known as ‘screen time’) is time children could spend being active. Tips for parents to reduce children’s ‘small screen’ time:
- Set limits on your child’s TV watching and time spent playing electronic/computer games. Monitor how much ‘screen time’ your child engages in – you may be surprised at how many hours it actually is!
- Designate certain days of the week as ‘screen free’ days – it’s good for children to have one or more days during the week when no TV or computer games are allowed
- Leave the TV off – only have the TV on when it’s actually being watched; otherwise, turn it off and use music for background noise
- Eat at the table and leave the TV off – try to eat at the table as a family, not in front of the TV
- Be selective about what your child watches – most children will happily sit and watch whatever is on the screen for hours on end if allowed to do so. Be selective and use your child’s allocated screen time to watch quality children’s programs they enjoy
- Keep TVs and computers out of your child’s bedroom – keep these in a common area of the house so that you can monitor use.
