From the Principal
Our School Association Committee met last week. The focus topic was the Master Plan for school grounds. The committee reviewed the plan and made some further recommendations regarding implementation. Please feel free to contact the office if you would like to find out more.
Staff have been busy writing reports in readiness to be sent home next week. If you have any questions regarding the reports, please don’t hesitate to talk with your child’s teacher.
A reminder that 3 way conferences will be happening in the last week of term. It is not too late to return your form to the office. We look forward to discussing your child’s progress at the meeting.

Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids
Our current fortnightly Hilly Kids focus has been “Communicating Positively”. Our focus topic for the next two weeks will be “Respecting Adults”.
Respecting Adults
There are many adults around our school, home and community who help us. It may be your teacher, the canteen worker, the bus driver or your next door neighbour.
It’s not OK to ignore what they ask you to do. It’s not OK to be rude when they talk to you.
These people are there to help you and guide you into the correct way of doing things and to follow the rules of society. They are always looking after us, making sure we are safe and happy.
We need to show respect to these adults by:
- using our manners by saying please and thank you,
- following their instructions
- listening when they speak
- giving way
- offering to help
Respecting adults is important. All of us would like to be respected and all children should show respect to all adults, whether they be our parents, grandparents, bus drivers, shop owners or teachers. Respecting adults shows everyone that we are friendly and appreciative children at Hillcrest.
Our Hilly Kid for “Setting Goals” was William from 4/5K and our Aussie of the Month for May was Ryan from 5/6HP. Congratulations to you both and well done to our other class representatives.

NWPSSA Cross Country
Congratulations to those students who were selected to represent our school in the recent NWPSSA Cross Country event in Ulverstone. It looks like our runners had a great time! Well done, everyone!

Winter Woolies Day
Wednesday, July 3rd (Friday, July 5th for Kinder B)
On this day students can come to school rugged up in their ‘Winter Woolies’ - for example: scarves, beanies, ugg boots, coats, gloves and cosy clothing. We will be asking for a gold coin donation to go to ‘Gran’s Van’, a service that provides support to those in our community who are having a difficult time. They have volunteers who prepare and deliver thousands of nutritious meals, resulting in a positive impact on the health and well-being of the communities we serve.
On the same day we will also have a Soup day for our canteen lunches. Soup + Dinner Roll can be ordered for $3. There will be no other menu items available for lunch on this day. The normal snack items will be available at recess.
A note will be sent home next week so that children can return the tear-off slip if they wish to order a warm hearty soup and dinner roll from the canteen on Winter Woolies Day.
Snuggly Afternoon in the Library
Mrs Baker will have the heaters on, the cushions out and the kettle on in the library for Storytime, sharing the story ‘Cub’s First Winter’
This will provide a cosy place for you to meet your child after school or, alternatively, if you are waiting for your 3-Way Conference meeting you will have a nice space in which to wait.
Sunrise Bakery Pie Drive
Thank you to everyone who made the effort to get orders for the Pie Drive. The delivery date for our pie orders is Wednesday, June 26th. If you are available to help pack orders first thing that morning, please leave your name at the school office.
Orders can be collected after 11am on that day. Please ensure that you collect your orders by 4:30pm as we do not have the capacity to refrigerate items.

School Fair
Preparations for our school fair for 2019 are well under way. We’ve set the date for Saturday, October 26th. At this stage we would really appreciate your assistance, if possible, in the coming months.
- If you can sew, knit, make jewellery, cards or get creative for us it would help stock our craft stall with an amazing array of wonderful handcrafts
- Now’s the time to get potting, striking and sowing for our plant and produce stall
- If you are a whiz at pickles, preserves, jams and sauces don’t forget to do a few extra jars for our stall, too.
- Keep us in mind over the holidays as you clean out the cupboards for donations to our second-hand stall: any books, kids’ puzzles, toys, games and dvds. (Please note: No second-hand items or white elephant items other than those listed above.)
- Lucky Dips & Lucky Jars - we are also looking for items for lucky dips, such as small new novelties and toys, wrapped lollies, hair accessories, trinkets, stationery, stickers, etc.
Items (except plants) can be dropped into the school office.

Tuckerbox Tips
Top Alternative to Chips
Chips and crisps are made from potatoes, but prepared by cooking in oil. They are high in fat and salt and best eaten occasionally. Try some of the following alternatives to chips in your child’s lunchbox:
- Nibble mix with plain popcorn, dried fruit and breakfast cereal
- Rice cakes, corn thins or rice crackers
- Wholemeal or multigrain crispbreads, eg Ryvita or Vita-Weats
- Mini toasts or grissini sticks
- Homemade pita chips - cut pita bread into triangles, sprinkle with grated cheese and bake in a moderate oven until crispy.

Move Well Eat Well
Children who are encouraged and supported in their game playing will gain skills they can use for the rest of their lives and will be more inclined to stick with healthy sporting and lifestyle activities as they grow older.
- Support your children’s choice of activities. Some kids go for organised sports such as netball and basketball. Other children prefer less structured activities like bike riding.
- Give gifts that encourage activities. For birthdays and Christmas give bats, Frisbees, bikes, skateboards and skipping ropes. Make it easy for your children to stay active.
- Lock up the car and leave it at home for short journeys, like trips to the shops. Take a bike ride, go rollerblading or walk there instead!
