From the Principal
It has been great to see so many families attending 3 way conferences this week. These meetings are an important way to provide feedback regarding your child. As always, if you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher. Thanks to everyone who has participated.
We have minimal staff changes going into Term 3. Deb Niaura has been at Hillcrest Primary School since 2013. Deb has decided to finish at Hillcrest at the end of this term. Deb has been a wonderful support to many students and staff during her time here. I want to thank Deb for her many contributions to our community and wish her all the best for the future.
As we come to the end of another term, I hope that everyone has a happy and safe holiday. I look forward to catching up in Term 3! Don’t forget that Monday 22nd July is a Professional Learning day for staff; students do not attend on this day.

Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids
Our current fortnightly Hilly Kids focus has been “Respecting Adults”. Our focus topic for the first two weeks of Term Three will be “Rights & Responsibilities”.
Rights & Responsibility
We quite often hear the word rights. So what are they? People talk about the right to an education or the right to vote. Basically it means that people are entitled to something and that those around them, or those in authority, should make sure they get what they are entitled to.
In our school children have a number of rights:
- The right to learn.
- The right to be safe.
- The right to be respected.
It is everyone’s responsibility to make sure that these rights are respected. How can you do that?
- Make sure that you help those around you learn by being a good learner yourself. Concentrate on your work and spend your time productively in class.
- In the playground, play safely and look after those around you. Be friendly and this will help others feel safe.
- Respect all the people in our school. Think about how you behave with them.
- Look after the rights of others and your rights will be looked after as well.
Our Hilly Kid for “Communicating Positively” was Axel from P-1F. Congratulations, Axel and well done to our other class representatives.

Storytime in the library
It’s been wonderful to have seen so many families pop into the library after school to listen to stories read by our school’s staff members. Storytime will continue in term 3 with readings happening every Thursday in the library in even weeks straight after school. Mr Purton will start the term off on 1st August at 2:45pm. See you there!
Holiday Challenge
By now you should have received an information sheet about our whole-school Family Marble Run Challenge. We encourage you to work as a family to create an interesting marble (or small ball) run using things you might otherwise recycle at home, for example, cardboard tubes, small boxes, plastic trays … the list is endless! If you need some visual inspiration, just search online for ‘marble runs’ and check out what other people have built. We’d love to see your marble runs in action after the holiday break so please bring them in then.
Holiday Reading
Don’t forget to read, read, read during the holiday break! The Devonport library is open daily and has so much to offer. If you can’t make it there, reading ‘junk mail’, making shopping lists, reading game instructions, following recipes, talking about movies you watch or places you visit or things you do are all great ways to help improve not only reading and oral literacy, but numeracy as well.
Holiday Calendar
Why not help your child/ren set holiday literacy goals? Right-click below to print out a school holiday calendar. Think about one literacy (or numeracy!) activity for each day and write it on the calendar. Tick off the things as they are done. Please encourage your children to bring the page in after the holidays to share their learning with their teachers.
Families who do not have their Working With Vulnerable People registration – Please come to the library and use our facilities to do this and I will be there to support you should you need help. Remember: if you wish to attend a class excursion with your child/ren you are required to have one.

Sports News
Tasmanian All Schools Cross Country
Congratulations to William Smith, who ran at Symmons Plains last week. He proudly represented our school with his achievements.
DJSI
Congratulations to Molly for receiving last week’s ‘Rapid Supply Player of the Week’ award. She was selected because of her good sportsmanship and respect shown towards other players and the referee.
Grade 3-5 Swimming and Water Safety Programme
Early next term information will be sent home to parents regarding the Grade 3/4/5 Swimming and Water Safety Program and will include two forms: the Aquatic Consent and Major Excursion forms. Parents are asked to complete the forms promptly and return them to the school office. They need to be returned before students are allowed to participate in our swimming and water safety program.

Alliteration
Earlier this term in 3/4BT we did some work on alliteration. We read 'Animalia' by Graeme Base and then had a go at writing our own descriptive sentences, choosing a letter of the alphabet. Here are some of our attempts.

5₵ Coin Challenge
We will be running our 5₵ Coin Challenge again in Term 3. Classes will collect 5₵ coins and have fun with activities such as weighing the coins to estimate the value and laying them out to measure how long their coin lines can get.
Last year we collected 12,180 5₵ coins and we aim to be bigger and better in this year’s challenge. So, over the holidays, start collecting those pesky little coins and get ready to bring them along next term when we launch the challenge. Let’s see which class can top the coin pile!
Sunrise Bakery Pie Drive
Our pie drive was a great success again this year. We raised just over $2500, which was a huge effort! Thank you to all who went out of your way to get orders and contributed to this wonderful fundraising effort.
Also, a big thankyou to the bunch of volunteers – Fiona Smith, Janelle Hays, Jackie Langmaid, Tenille Bolton, Michelle McGuire and Mrs Hillier – who did an awesome job of packing the orders.

Tuckerbox Lunchbox Ideas
Entice young children to eat with playful lunchboxes, including fun, re-useable plastic containers and a selection of little bites. Think fruit cut into chunks, tiny yoghurts, small squares of muesli slice, tiny Anzac biscuits and squares of cheese. Remember, lunch doesn’t have to mean a sandwich. Most child-friendly meals can be served in an airtight container with a small spoon or fork. Savoury mince, sweetcorn fritters, meatballs, frittata, lasagne, veggie bakes and pasta will all provide a healthy lunchbox alternative to the traditional sandwich.
