From the Principal
It is great to see new items of equipment being added to the school as part of the School Association Committee Master Plan for outdoor spaces. Our new soccer goals have been installed in the Early Childhood area. They are being well used and student feedback has been very positive. Thanks go to our School Association committee for funding the goals. We are also getting new basketball/netball hoops installed, so we look forward to using those as well, when they arrive!
A reminder to families that our staff car park is needed for staff parking. We would ask that families park on the street or use the short term drop off at the top of the driveway. Please make sure that you do not park in the Disabled Parking designated area unless your permit is displayed. These designated parking areas are provided for families who need to drop off students that require easy access to the school. Your co-operation is appreciated.

REMEMBER: ALL ENVELOPES MUST BE RETURNED TO SCHOOL BEFORE PHOTO DAY, EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT ORDERING PHOTOS!
School Satisfaction Survey
Annual School Satisfaction Surveys for parents are being conducted during August 2019 across Tasmanian government schools.
The surveys provide an opportunity for parents to give important feedback on what the school does well and where we can improve. Questions cover a range of topics about our school.
All responses are secure and anonymous.
We encourage you to complete the survey to give our school a clear direction for future programs and services for students.
IMPORTANT: In 2019 all students will be undertaking a Wellbeing Survey that will incorporate elements of the Satisfaction Survey.
Please contact the office if you wish to use a school computer to complete the survey.
Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids
Our current fortnightly Hilly Kids focus is “Fixing Things Up”. Our focus topic for the next two weeks will be “Doing Your Best”.
Doing Your Best
It is important to do your best in everything that you do! It involves developing personal qualities of never giving up, having another go and being persistent if you don't achieve it the first time.
By always doing your best, you can feel proud, knowing that there was nothing more that you could have done to achieve your goal. It doesn't matter whether you come first or last, it’s more important to know that you did your very best in whatever you are doing!
Our Hilly Kid for “Rights” was Maya from 3-4BT and our Aussie of the Month for July is Aisha from 5/6HP. Congratulations, Maya and Aisha and well done to our other class representatives.

Zones of Regulation
Have you heard your child talk about the four Zones of Regulation that we use at school? The Zones of Regulation uses four colours to help students identify their feelings and provides strategies to help them become more independent in controlling their emotions and impulses, manage their sensory needs and improve their ability to problem solve conflicts. To help you find out more about the zones, Mrs Jess Bellchambers from Kinder B will soon be running an information session for families. A hot drink and biscuits will be available. See you there!
What: Zones of Regulation
information session
When: Wednesday, 4th September at 2.15pm.
Where: Hillcrest Primary School Library
Storytime in the Library
It’s been great to see families pop into the library straight after school every even week Thursday to listen to a story before heading home. Recent readers have been Mr Purton and Miss Miller with Mr Steele, one of our wonderful teacher assistants reading on Thursday, 29th August.
Those who do not have their Working With Vulnerable People registration – Please come to the library and use our facilities to do this and I will be there to support you should you need help. Remember: if you wish to attend a class excursion or participate in parent help with your child/ren you are required to have one.

NAIDOC Week
For the week of Tuesday 23 June our school celebrated NAIDOC Week (National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee). NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Each year there is a theme and this year’s theme was ‘Voice, Treaty and Truth: Let’s work together for a shared future’.
On the Tuesday morning Mr Justin Woods addressed the school with a ‘Welcome to the Country’ and provided the students with some information about what NAIDOC Week means and why it is celebrated. All classes participated in several activities throughout the day. Some of these included: dot paintings, weaving, cooking and necklace making; just to name a few. The children were thoroughly engaged and their work samples looked fabulous.

Grade 6 Reece High School Transition
Reece High School organises a transition program for Grade 6 students from our feeder primary schools during the remainder of Term 3 and Term 4; Grade 6 students are invited to take part. The transition from primary school to high school can be daunting for students, regardless of which high school they ultimately attend. To assist in this process, your child will be able to take part in a variety of transition opportunities provided by Reece High School.
The first of our transition opportunities for your child start this week. On Friday 16th August all Grade 6 boys will attend a Transition Day at Camp Banksia and on Monday the 19th of August all Grade 6 girls will attend a Transition Day at Camp Banksia. The excursion activities will be run by the Reece High School Prefect Board, Student Council Representatives, Grade 7 teachers, and the Junior School Assistant Principal. Students will travel to and from Camp Banksia by bus. The bus will pick students up from their Primary School around 9am and return them by the end of their normal school day. In addition, students will be accompanied by a staff member from their primary school for the day. They will need to wear their full school uniform and bring their lunch, drink and a hat. The aim of this excursion is to build relationships between students from the different primary schools.
School Bike Riding
A lunch time bike riding session for Prep to Grade 2 students was held last Friday. Everyone had a great time!

Recently there have been a number of concerning incidents around spectators NOT abiding by the Spectators codes of conduct. Below is a copy for parents and family members to familiarise themselves with. Parents/spectators should direct any concerns during game to their coach and/or a DJS committee member.
New Soccer Tops
How cool is Amelia looking in our new school soccer top! We recently purchased these from a donation we received from MSP, our long standing school photographers. The Hillcrest Primary School Association would like to kindly thank MSP for their donation which has allowed us to purchase new soccer tops for our students. We look forward to continuing our partnership with MSP and we look forward to their team returning this month for our next lot of school photos. It’s all smiles here!
Fathers’ Day Stall
The Fathers’ Day Stall will be held on Wednesday, August 28th. The purpose of the stall is to give each child an opportunity to buy a small gift for their father for Fathers’ Day. It is also a School Association fundraising event.
Parents are asked to buy or make a small gift to the value of $3 and send it to school by Monday, August 26th. Please do not wrap gifts. Your child will put the present in a box in the classroom and tick their name on the list on the box. Every child who donates to the stall will go into a draw to win a gift for Dad.
On the day of the stall please send your child to school with $3 to purchase a gift for Dad. If you do not want your child to participate, please tell him/her beforehand.
Donations of wrapping paper are also needed. Offers of assistance to help run the stall on the Wednesday from 9-10:30am would be most welcome. Please leave your name at the school office if you can help on the day.

Healthy Bones Action Week
Dairy products all start from milk, which is a major source of calcium for growing children. For young children the need for calcium is especially high as skeletal tissue is constantly growing as they develop.
Try these ideas to add dairy foods for strong bones to your child’s lunch:
- Wholemeal or multigrain crackers with cheese and vegemite
- Low fat yoghurt
- Low fat custard with fruit
- Instant puddings made with milk
- Creamed rice
- Cheese cubes and vegetable sticks
