From the Principal

Welcome back to term 4! This term is always busy, so make sure you keep an eye on the newsletter and our Facebook page for upcoming events.

Professional Learning Day/Public Holiday

A reminder that next Friday, 1st November, is a Professional Learning Day for staff. We will be working on reviewing the year and planning for 2020. Staff will also be undertaking Disability Modules and reading PL. Students do not attend on this day. A reminder also, that the following Monday, November 4th, is Recreation Day, a public holiday in the north of the state. Students return to school on Tuesday, November 5th.

Congratulations

Congratulations go to Myha Peterson, who competed in the Judo Australia National School Judo Championships held in conjunction with the Gold Coast International Open Championships recently. She won a Silver in the Australian International Open Championships and won Gold, representing Hillcrest Primary School, in the National School Championships for her division! This has built on her efforts in September when both Myah and her brother, Tyla, competed in the Bridgewater PCYC Club Open Competition. Myha won two gold medals and Tyla won a silver. Well done to both Myha and Tyla!

Reece High School 2020 Enrolments

All grade 6 students were given enrolment forms for Reece High School for 2020. There are still a number of forms outstanding. RHS has requested that any students who are intending to enrol at RHS for 2020 please return their forms as soon as possible.

No Hat No Play

We would like to remind you that in Term 4 all students and staff MUST wear a sun-safe hat when outside at recess and lunchtime. Students who do not have a school hat will be restricted to staying in a designated shade area at these times. Cap style hats are not acceptable; it must be a hat with a brim all the way around. School hats are available in the school office for $7.

Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids

Our current fortnightly Hilly Kids focus is “Saying No”. Our next focus topic will be “Respecting Property/Our School”.

Respecting Property

Around our school, our home and the homes of our friends there are many things we use that make our life more enjoyable. At home it may be the television or the computer. At school it may be sports equipment, art materials or some of the play equipment in the yard. We need to look after whatever we use, not just for ourselves, but because others like to use these things as well.

Respecting our School

We all enjoy our school. School means different things to different people, but everyone has their favourite place to be. For some people this may be reading a book in a quiet corner of their classroom or working on the computer in the library. For others it may be sitting with friends under the old trees, playing footy on the oval or climbing on the equipment. Whatever you like to do it is important that we look after our school, both inside and outside, so that it is a pleasant place to be.

Respecting our school means making sure we work together as a team to keep it clean and free from litter. It means making sure no-one damages the buildings, furniture or school equipment. The trees and gardens need to be respected too, as they not only make the schoolyard look better, but they also provide shade and shelter. In the coming months we hope to make a big change to the grounds of the school and we will need support from all of the students to ensure these changes are sustainable and benefit us all.

Respecting each other’s play areas will mean everyone can play happily in the yard. We need to remember our school rules, they are there to help keep our school a safe, happy place.

This is our school. We should be proud of it and work hard to ensure it is a clean, safe and happy environment for everyone.

Our Hilly Kid for “Negotiating” was Luke from P-1P and our Aussie of the Month for September was Nevayah from 4-5K. Congratulations, Luke and Nevayah and well done to our other class representatives.

School Fair

Plans for the School Fair are well underway! We have some great things planned for the event on Saturday, October 26 and hope to see everyone there supporting this great event! There will be lots to do on the Oval: Jumping Castle, Giant Slide, Mini Jeeps, Zorb Balls and Swing Cars as well as Pony Rides and the Petting Zoo. Check out the emergency services, too!

There will also be a Haunted Room with a Haunted Virtual Ride and also a Spooky Trail and a Rave Cave! Have fun in Sideshow Alley and throw a sponge, splat the rat or pick the nose for a lucky dip – and there’s so much more fun to be had!

Come for lunch! Sit down and have a bite to eat while enjoying live music in the Don River Yurt Co. yurt! We’ll have sausages, hamburgers, Singapore noodles, hot spuds, pizza, saveloys, fruit salad, pavlova, donuts, fairy floss, Hill Rock ice cream and, of course, Hilly Café coffees, hot chocolate and tea!

We’ll have stalls galore! Plants are always popular and we’ll have a great range of gift hampers so you can get some early Christmas shopping done. There will be books, games, puzzles, craft, a fully stocked cake stall, lucky jars, show bags, glitter tattoos, face painting…..so much to see and do!

If you have some donations for the Fair please make sure you deliver them to the school office this week if they are non-perishable. Goods for the Cake Stall can be delivered on Friday. We have trays and labels in the office if anyone needs any for the baked goods, jams, preserves, etc.

Raffle Books

Please make sure your raffle books and money are back at the office by tomorrow, Friday 25th so they can be included in the draw. The winners will be drawn on Saturday 26th at the Fair.

Please be mindful of the laws regarding children door-knocking to sell raffle tickets: they MUST be accompanied by an adult.

Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes

Operation Christmas Child was a great success again this year. Thank you to everyone who took the time to donate items for the boxes. We also had a generous donation of knitted beanies and toys which allowed each class to make a selection for their boxes. Students and teachers did a wonderful job of packing their boxes, which were delivered to the drop off point earlier this week.

Move Well Eat Well

Get Your Family Outside!

Now that spring is here and the weather is warming up, get the family outside and into the backyard!

  • Get out into the garden. Everyone can pitch in weeding, trimming and planting. Plant a flower bed and let the kids select the seedlings you put in.
  • Plant out a vegetable patch. Kids love to pick and eat food they have grown themselves and tending the beds is a great pastime.
  • Build a cubbyhouse or renovate the old one.
  • Play hide and seek or chasing games.
  • Have a picnic lunch or afternoon tea.
  • Wash the dog together.
  • Play on the playground equipment with them instead of just watching.
