From the Principal
It is becoming a very busy time of year, with only 4 weeks to go! Make sure you keep up to date with everything that is happening. Our newsletter is a great source of information, as well as our school Facebook page. As always, if you have any questions, please let us know!
Congratulations
It is always great to share student achievement and I wish to congratulate Londe, who was recently recognised at the Department of Education Student Awards. Londe was awarded both a Growth award and an Aspiration and Achievement award. Growth awards recognise student progress over time, identifying a student in every school who has demonstrated significant academic growth. Aspiration and Achievement awards recognise student aspiration and achievement.
Christmas Parade
Students and staff have been busy getting ready for this year’s Christmas Parade. The Devonport Christmas parade is on the evening of 6th December. Please note the route has changed for 2019. More information has been sent home to students who have been in the choirs this year. Make sure you come along and give them a big cheer as they go past!
2020 Classes
A reminder that we will soon be placing students in classes for 2020. If you have any particular requests, please make an appointment prior to Wednesday, 27th November. We try and meet requests where possible, but a range of factors contribute to how classes are structured.
Kinder 2020
If families are aware of any children in our area who will be turning 4 by the 1st of January 2020, please encourage them to enquire about enrolling in our Kinder for next year. Your support is appreciated!
End of Year Reporting
As a school, in line with DoE reporting requirements, we provided a full report mid-year with detailed information about student progress and areas for future focus.
The summary report at the end of the year is designed to provide brief information about student end-of-year results. Reports will provide ratings for English, Maths, Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) and Science. The reports will also have a brief general comment.
Kindergarten students will receive a collation of their student learning through work samples.
As in previous years, families are welcome to discuss their child’s progress or the end of year report with the class teacher. Please discuss this with your child’s teacher or contact the office if you would like to arrange a meeting.
Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids
Our current fortnightly Hilly Kids focus is “Respecting People”. Our next focus topic will be “Good Winners Good Losers”.
Good Winners/Good Losers
Winning is great fun but we should remember that we need to win in a way that keeps our friends and promotes others’ respect for us. Celebrate our successes but do it in a way that does not offend or hurt others.
At all times play fairly. Give others a go and stick to the spirit of the rules. In the end the game should be fun for all, win, lose or draw.
Do
- Keep smiles and celebrations low-key.
- Comment on good players but do not overdo it.
- Always try hard even if you are losing.
- Thank others for the game.
- Encourage your team members and give everyone a go.
- Respect your opposition and all their hard work.
Don’t
- Don’t boast about your ability or victory.
- Don’t comment on how far behind the others are.
- Don’t point out where the others are going wrong.
- Don’t act happy about others’ mistakes, e.g. don’t clap or laugh at poor shots.
- Don’t cheat or manipulate others.
Our Hilly Kid for “Respecting the School & Property” was Ellie from 5-6HP and our Aussie of the Month for October was Ariarnah from P-1P. Congratulations, Ellie and Ariarnah, and well done to our other class representatives.

Grade 1-2 Swimming Program
The Grade 1-2 Swimming Program, to be held at the Nixon St Primary School pool, begins on Monday. Please make sure you return your blue aquatic consent and major excursion/medical forms to the office as soon as possible, please.

Hillcrest Athletics Carnival
Our school’s Athletics Carnival will be held on Friday, December 6th – weather permitting. Students need to pack an extra drink and must wear appropriate clothes and shoes for running. No singlet tops or crop tops, please. Don’t forget to wear your TEAMS colours! BLUE GUM – Blue, BANKSIA – Red and WATTLE – Green. If you don’t know your child’s TEAMS colour, please ask their teacher.
All parents and community members are welcome to attend to view the day’s running and novelty events. A program is provided below or you can get a copy in the school office.
There will be a sausage sizzle for lunch on the day. An order form will be sent home next week. If it rains, the sausage sizzle will still go ahead.

Christmas Tree Panel
Once again this year students from our school have helped paint a panel for the community Christmas tree in the Rooke Street Mall. The panels will be presented to the Devonport community on Friday, December 6th during the Devonport Christmas Parade. Make sure you take the opportunity to go down and have a look at all the panels and, at the same time, wave to our students in the Christmas Parade!
5-6 Hortle/Purton
The way an aspiring architect learns to sketch is by using the 2 point perspective style. Over the first 3 weeks of term, we learnt how to draw like this, making our drawings appear 3 dimensional. All there is to it, is to rule a vertical line and then a series of diagonal lines from it to the 2 vanishing points on the side of a piece of paper. Here are the best pieces we each created.

2020 Calendar
Have you ordered your calendar(s) yet? All families were sent home an order form for a 2020 calendar featuring your child’s artwork. They would make great Christmas gifts for family members! To order, please fill out the form and return it to the school office ASAP. Calendars will not be printed until they are paid for.
Fundraising Committee

Tuckerbox Tips
Consider the following snack ideas for your child’s end of year/Christmas school party:
- Fruit kebabs using green and red fruits (kiwi, green apples, grapes, strawberries, watermelon)
- Vegie kebabs using green and red vegies (cherry tomatoes, snow peas, cucumber, radishes)
- Yoghurt cups topped with berries
- Mini pizza muffins (on English muffins) with green and red vegies and a sprinkle of cheese
- Dips, biscuits and sliced vegie platter – arrange these to make a snowman, Christmas tree or reindeer face!

Fun Family Activity Ideas:
- Instead of heading straight home, go by the park after school so kids aren’t tempted by the TV. Remember to take some healthy snacks & lots of water!
- Swimming is a great family activity. Head to the pool or, if you’re lucky, the beach. It’s also suitable for the whole family & a really important skill for the kids to have.
- Get the whole family washing the car. It’s a good way to burn off some energy!
- Get crafty! Make a kite together & then get outside to test fly it.
