Start of Term 2 for students – more info below

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

Once again, I would like to thank you for your ongoing partnership as we navigate through this unique time.

What will Term Two look like in your school?

The Minister for Education and Training has announced that, during Term 2 in Tasmanian Government Schools, students will continue to learn at home, with teachers leading this learning. This will be regularly reviewed based on Public Health advice and updates.

  • Students will commence the term on Tuesday, 28 April 2020. (Monday will be a teaching preparation day – student free).
  • Teachers will provide students with a learning schedule and suitable learning activities, which:
    - may be online, offline, or a combination of both (combination arrangements will be reserved for parents/carers who work part-time/shift work and will have the capacity to keep children at home when they are there)
    - will align with the relevant Curriculum for your child/ren’s age group.
  • Teachers will be in regular contact with students to provide support for the learning activities.
  • Schools will still be open for students, but only if your circumstances mean that you are unable to supervise (eg work commitments) or support your child’s learning at home.

To help us make plans for Term 2, please let us know how your child/ren will be engaging at school for the first five (5) weeks of Term 2 by completing the form sent home and mailing it back to our school or by clicking on the link below:

Finally, from the staff at Hillcrest Primary School, we wish you a safe and happy break.

End of Term Awards

In these uncertain times we felt it was still important to acknowledge the efforts of our student so, even though we could not hold an end of term assembly, teachers still chose students for the end of term awards. Check out the video of the teachers ‘presenting’ their class awards here:

Easter Raffle

A big thankyou to our parents and students who supported this year’s Easter Raffle by selling and buying tickets, making it, once again, a great fundraising event! Thank you also to Mavis Kelly for her kind donation of two Easter cakes for the raffle, which was drawn on Tuesday. Congratulations to the winners:

1st – Maureen F
2nd – Wendy S
3rd – Lucas M

Tuckerbox Tips

Children have small stomachs and need snacks between meals to help meet their growth and energy needs. This makes recess an important part of the day’s food, not just something extra or a ‘treat’. Use foods from the five food groups (breads & cereals, fruit, vegetables, dairy, meat & meat alternatives) to pack healthy lunchbox snacks.

Try some of the following ideas:

  • Small bag of plain popcorn, dried fruit & breakfast cereal
  • A piece of fresh fruit in season
  • Rice crackers or wholemeal crackers with cheese
  • Fruit bun or fruit bread
  • Tub of low fat yoghurt
  • Container with cheese cubes & vegetable sticks

Nature Play

So much to explore! Take up the “Autumn Challenge” with your family in your own backyard during the school holidays:

  • Collect different types of leaves
  • Paint and decorate pine cones and acorns
  • Splash in a puddle and make mud pies
  • Collect some bugs in a clear container and draw them
  • Plant bulbs or some winter veggies
  • Dig for dinosaur bones
  • Organise a backyard scavenger hunt (just google ‘backyard scavenger hunt’ for great ideas)
  • Build a backyard obstacle course
  • Rediscover forgotten corners of the backyard
  • Plan a camp-out in the backyard
