Rights
Our current Hilly Kids focus topic is Respecting People. Our next focus topic will be Rights.
We quite often hear the word rights. So, what are they? People talk about the right to an education or the right to vote. Basically, it means that people are entitled to something and that those around them, or those in authority, should make sure they get what they are entitled to.
In our school children have a number of rights:
- The right to learn.
- The right to be safe.
- The right to be respected.
It is everyone’s responsibility to make sure that these rights are respected. How can you do that?
- Make sure that you help those around you learn by being a good learner yourself. Concentrate on your work and spend your time productively in class.
- In the playground play safely and look after those around you. Be friendly and this will help others feel safe.
- Respect all the people in our school. Think about how you behave with them.
- Look after the rights of others and your rights will be looked after as well.
Our Hilly Kid for the ‘Responsibility’ topic from weeks 1 & 2 was Ezra from P-1L and for ‘Manners’ for weeks 3 & 4 was Beau from 5-6F. Our Hilly Kid for ‘Respecting the Environment’ was Ava from 3-4B and our Aussie of the Month for February was Sophie from P-1P. Congratulations, Ezra, Beau, Ava and Sophie!

Due to new COVID Safety Protocol, the NW Athletics Carnival was split into 2 days. On Wednesday, March 10th, Mrs Melhuish, Mrs Bound and Mr McGuire took the Grade 3/4 athletes to the Penguin Sports Complex to compete against other North West Tasmanian Schools. With perfect weather conditions the grade 3/4 students energetically took to the track to compete in their selected events. All students did an amazing job, participating to the best of their abilities and represented our school and community with the most utmost respect and pride.
A special mention to the following students who made it to the semi-finals for their selected events:
Amelia (75m, 200m), Maddison (75m, 100m), Kyiesha (100m, 200m), Grace (75m), Hayley (200m), Mackenzie (100m, 200m), Lawi (100m) and Charlotte (100m).
From there Maddison had another fantastic run and made the Twilight Finals event held on March 16th. Congratulations, Maddison!
We had another fabulous day at the NWPSSA Athletics Carnival on Thursday, March 11th with our 5/6 students. It was awesome to see our students step out of their comfort zone and give their events their very best effort!
Congratulations to the following 5/6 students for making the semi-finals of their events:
Lucas (75m, 100m), Alicia (100m, 200m), Joshua (400m), Chace (75m, 100m), Shataya (75m, 200m), Michael (100m), Zane (75m), Myha (100m, 400m), Alexis (75m, 200m), Lucas R (200m), Melanie (400m) and Milana (75m, 100m).
A big congratulations to Myha for placing 2nd in the 400m Final. She has a brilliant running style that saw her also win a place in the Twilight Finals!
The following students were also selected to take part in the Twilight Finals: Josh, William, Melanie, Alexis and Oliver.
Final scores came in and we were excited that Hillcrest took out second place in Division C with 513 points, just 7 points behind the winners! Thanks to all our families who helped prepare children for a successful day!

Hands on Learning
The Hands on Learning students and staff would like to say a huge THANK YOU to the following business for their very generous donation of tools to the program:
Beck Mitre 10, Nubco PTY LTD, Repco and Super Cheap Auto
In HoL this week, we have started to make a shadow board for our tools. We have also started preparation work on the Nature Play space behind the brown shed, ready to mulch, paint and fence the area over the next few weeks and into next term.

LiFT
When you hear ‘reading with your child’, are you picturing you and your child rushing to do a levelled home reader just before bed? It’s hard, we get it. Reading to, with and by your child can be so much more exciting.

5-6 Kelly
Students in 5/6 Kelly have been revisiting and extending their knowledge about important places in Tasmania and Australia. They have been using atlases and their iPads, to gather information. Here is some of our information about places in Tasmania.
Hillcrest Tuckerbox
Fruit is a good source of vitamins and fibre and is full of energy for active children. It is important children eat a rainbow of different coloured fruits every day. To increase fruit in lunchboxes, try these tips:
- Fruit salad - easy to eat bite-sized pieces of watermelon, grapes, kiwi, oranges, rockmelon, pineapple,
- Fruit added to mini muffins, scones & pikelets,
- Fruit bread or fruit buns cut into bite-sized fingers,
- Fruit in custard or yoghurt,
- Tinned fruit in natural juice as an alternative to fresh,
- Nibble pack with dried fruit, vegetable sticks & cheese cubes.

How to Care for Water Bottles
When water bottles are not cleaned and stored properly, they can get smelly, slimy or mouldy. To prevent this from happening:
- Fill water bottles with fresh water only
- Tip unused water out at the end of the day
- Wash water bottles thoroughly with soapy water - the warmer the water the better
- Store empty water bottles with the lid off
- If extra cleaning is needed the following agents can be used: a sanitiser such as Milton or baby bottle sanitiser, vinegar or baking soda. Bleach is not recommended as it is not safe to consume and leaves an odour
- Water bottles can deteriorate over time - regular replacement is recommended (at a minimum at the start of the year)

No Drama Discipline
Psychology Caffe are pleased to offer an opportunity for parents/carers to bring questions and learn about responding to their child’s difficult behaviours and how to best support their child’s development. Our No Drama Discipline program is a series of 8 Thursday evening sessions, starting Thursday 15th April from 6:45pm-8pm at 22 King Edward Street, Ulverstone. This parenting program provides parents/carers with skills to help their child manage their emotions and behaviour. Brain- based parenting aims to facilitate healthy attachment and brain development in children, so they grow up to be emotionally intelligent and resilient adults.
