From the Principal
Welcome back to term 2! I trust everyone had a chance to have a break over Easter and the school holiday period. We have a very busy few weeks ahead of us.
Grade 3 and 5 NAPLAN Online testing will commence next week. Information had been sent home previously for families with students in these grades. Further information is provided in today’s newsletter.
The Australian Curriculum is currently going through a review and public consultation is currently underway. Please consider giving feedback.
The Australian Curriculum - Have a say in what your child learns.
All students from Prep to Year 10 in Tasmanian schools are taught the Australian Curriculum.
The Curriculum is currently being reviewed and refined to ensure that it continues to be world class and best meet the needs of our students in our changing world.
Families and school community members are invited to contribute to the review. This is an important opportunity and we encourage you to visit the website and have your say in what your child learns. The website is open from 29 April – 8 July.

NAPLAN Online 2021
The National Assessment Program-Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) was first undertaken as an online test in Tasmania during 2019. Tasmanian schools will again participate in NAPLAN Online this year.
NAPLAN Online provides better assessment and more precise results. The assessments feature a tailored test design where the questions a student receives will depend on their answers to previous questions.
NAPLAN testing will be held from the 11 to 21 May 2021. Online testing will be available for each of the NAPLAN year levels (3, 5, 7 and 9).
NAPLAN assessments include four components, Writing, Numeracy, Conventions of Language and Reading. Please note that all Year Three students will be completing a paper-based Writing Test.
Schools will receive reports and results for participants following the completion of the NAPLAN Online assessment window. These Individual Student Reports will have the same format as in previous years. This format is used for every student in Australia.
School Association AGM
A reminder that tonight is our School Association AGM. This will be held in our new meeting room at 7.00pm. I warmly invite our community to come along and participate. I hope to see you there!

Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids
Negotiating
Our current Hilly Kids focus topic is Goal Setting. Our next focus topic for term 2 will be Negotiating.
Why learn this skill?
If you want someone to do something for you or to give you permission to do something, the best way to get what you want is to negotiate. Negotiation involves trying to get what you want by first working out what the other person wants and trying to give it to them. This way is called a “win-win” way of negotiation because both people get something they want. It is different from a “win-lose” approach where someone gets what they want, and the other person doesn’t get anything.
Negotiating needs to be planned and each side must complete their side of the bargain. For example: you may want a ride to footy training so you negotiate with mum to give you a ride and in return you will put the rubbish out. If you do not keep your part of the bargain, you won’t be trusted the next time and the relationship suffers.
Remember: You are more likely to get what you want and keep friends if the other person gets something too
Do:
- Decide what you want
- Think about what the other person might want in return (e.g. they might want to be sure that something they lend you will be looked after)
- Pick a good time to ask
- Use a friendly voice
- If you can’t work out what they want in return, ask them directly
- If the other person won’t agree with what you want, accept that. You won’t always get what you want.
- Keep your side of the bargain.
Don’t:
- Don’t ask at an inconvenient time (e.g. when the other person is busy or talking to someone else)
- Don’t use a grizzly, whingeing voice
- Don’t threaten, sulk, insult or get angry if you don’t get what you want.
Our Hilly Kid for the ‘Rights’ topic from weeks 9 & 10 was Addison from 5-6F. Congratulations Addison!

Launching into Learning
New Launching into Learning Babies Group starting this term! Enrol now!
P-1P
Last week in Prep/1 Parker we learned about ANZAC DAY. We listened to the story ANZAC Ted by Belinda Landsberry. We followed instructions and completed a guided drawing of ANZAC Ted. The students did an amazing job and the drawings turned out wonderful.

Exquisite Tidal Beasts Exhibition
Our students’ entries for the Exquisite Tidal Beasts Exhibition are now up on display on the outside wall of the paranaple Arts Centre in the laneway around the corner from the big TV. All students from grades 3 to 6 have a beastie up on the wall. How exciting is that!! Please make sure you take the time to pop around and have a look at the exhibition with your family!

Ideas to Get Your Family Moving More
- Plan to be active together: plan an afternoon each week to have quality time together. It could be kicking the footy at the local oval, walking the dog at the park or doing a fitness DVD together
- Explore places to be active: explore a national park, go bushwalking, take a walking tour of the city, bike ride together or go beachcombing
- Reduce the amount of screen time in your house: set some family rules about screens. For example, no screens at mealtimes or a limit of two hours of screen time each day, etc
- Fit activity into your family’s routine: instead of driving right to the school gate, park a distance away and enjoy a walk in the morning or afternoon
- Be a good role model to your kids: if an active lifestyle is part of your life, you’re much more likely to pass similar good habits to your children. Kids love it when mum and dad join in their games and it’s fun for adults to remember what it was like being a kid, too!
