From the Principal
Congratulations!
A big congratulations go to our school choirs, who participated in the Devonport Eisteddfod last week. Both choirs went very well, with a special shoutout to Choir 1, gaining first place. Feedback about both performances has been very positive. Thanks also to Gaye Kelly, who again led the choirs this year. Well done everyone!
No Hat, No Play
A reminder that, as we move into the warmer months, students will need to wear hats outside if UV is 3 or above. We have had UV readings of 3 this week, so students have been asked to wear their hats outside. If your child has their hat at home, please send it in their bag. Hats are also available for purchase at the school office.
Welcome
Welcome to Stefan Redford, who is undertaking his final practicum in 5/6K. We hope that you enjoy your time at Hillcrest!
School Association Meeting
A reminder that our next School Association meeting will be held next Thursday, 16th September, at 7.00pm in the Meeting Room. Topics to be covered include the Fair, 40-year celebrations and mobile phones at school. As always, please feel free to ask about the Association or come along to find out more.

Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids
Our current Hilly Kids focus topic is Negotiating. Our next focus topic for term 3 will be Problem Solving.
Problem Solving
From time to time, we make mistakes. Sometimes we make these mistakes accidentally; other times we are careless or, occasionally, we simply choose to do something we should not. Mistakes are a normal part of growing up and if we learn from our mistakes, we end up better in the end.
Learning to fix things up after mistakes is a difficult thing to do, but it is so important. Problem solving means repairing the damage you have caused to someone or something. It means you take responsibility for what has happened and, through your actions, prove to others and yourself that you know you have made a mistake and you want to improve the situation.
Be prepared to say sorry and then prove you are sorry by not letting it happen again. If something has been damaged, offer to fix it or replace it.
Take responsibility for your actions and be the first to say sorry; don’t wait until you have to apologise or need to be told by someone else to apologise.
Our Hilly Kid for the ‘Good Winners/Good Losers’ topic was Zoey from 3-4HB and our Aussie of the Month for August was Billie from 3-4B. Congratulations, Zoey and Billie!

Raffle Tickets
Raffle ticket books for our major raffle were sent home with students yesterday. Please sell them to family and friends and return the books with the money in a sealed envelope or bag to the school office by Wednesday, October 13th. The raffle will be drawn at the school fair on Saturday, October 16th. If you would like extra books to sell over the school holidays, please make sure to collect them from the office by Friday, September 24th (the last day of term).
Please be mindful of the laws regarding children door-knocking to sell raffle tickets: they MUST be accompanied by an adult.
Fair Plans
Plans for the School Fair are well underway! We have some great things planned for the event on Saturday, October 16. We hope to see everyone there supporting this great event!
There will be lots to do on the oval: Jumping Castle, Zorb Balls and Swing Cars as well as the Petting Zoo. There will also be a Haunted Room with a Haunted Virtual Ride and also a Spooky Trail and a Rave Cave!
Have fun in Sideshow Alley and throw a sponge, splat the rat or pick the nose for a lucky dip – and there’s so much more fun to be had!
Come for lunch! Sit down and have a bit to eat while enjoying live music in the Don River Yurt Co. yurt! We’ll have sausages, hamburgers, hot spuds, donuts, HillRock ice cream and, of course, Hilly Café coffees, hot chocolates and tea!
There will be stalls galore! Plants are always popular and there will be a great range of gift hampers so you can get some early Christmas shopping done. There will be books, games, puzzles, craft, a fully-stocked cake stall, lucky jars, show bags, glitter tattoos, face painting….so much to see and do!
We still need donations for our craft stall so get busy and finish those UFOs (UnFinished Objects) and, if you find yourself tidying closets over the holidays, we can use kids’ puzzles, books and games in good condition.
If you have a green thumb, we hope you have been potting up some plants for our plant stall. All donations of established plants will be greatly appreciated!
If you would like to volunteer on the day by helping on a stall or elsewhere for an hour or two, please leave your name at the office or with your child’s teacher.

Book Week in P/1L
During Book Week in Prep/1L we not only looked at the 2021 Shortlisted books, but we also read many books from previous years' awards. Each day we read a different book and completed an activity about it. At the end of the week, we had to choose our favourite book to write about and we also wrote some book reviews. 'Rex' by Ursula Dubosarsky and 'Feathers for Phoebe' by Rod Clement were quite popular. After the school Book Week parade, we all drew a 'selfie' of ourselves in our costumes. We love Book Week in Prep/1L!

Fathers’ Day Stall
Thanks to the wonderful efforts and generous donations from families and students, over $700 was raised from our Father’s Day Stall this year. What an amazing effort!!
A big thankyou to Jackie Langmaid and Gabe Clarke for their help on sale day.
Congratulations to Lily in 5/6K, the lucky winner of our Father’s Day Stall draw!

Eisteddfod News
Last week Hillcrest Primary School was represented beautifully by 32 of our students who sang at the City of Devonport Eisteddfod.
Choir 1, made up of students from 4/5 P, 5/6 K and 5/6 F, sang on Thursday morning and placed equal 1st! The adjudicator made a comment about our “amazing sound” and our “commitment to performance”. They sang Johnny B. Goode and Rainbow Connection.
Choir 2, consisting of students from 3/4 B and 3/4 HB, sang Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah and Believe It or Not (theme from The Greatest American Hero). What a fabulous performance from this Choir! The adjudicator commented on how beautifully we held our long notes and how much enjoyment the students had while they were singing!
There are lots of people who make our attendance at the Eisteddfod possible. Thank you so much to the parents of these students for your support in making sure they were all presented beautifully and thanks also to the staff, who are so very supportive of our extra practices and other interruptions. It really is a team effort!

Bandanna Day – October 29
Bandanna Day is the biggest fundraising and awareness campaign for Canteen. We will start selling bandannas at the school office in the last week of this term and then again at the start of Term 4. Bandannas will be $5 and there will be an option to pay with card via a QR code.
Tuckerbox Tips
Fresh fruit and vegetables are better than juice drinks. Too much juice can provide too many natural sugars, which can lead to a range of problems such as tooth decay, weight gain or a poor appetite for food. If you do offer your child fruit juice, use 100% juice and dilute it with water and limit it to one small glass a day. Soft drinks, cordial, sports drinks and fruit juice drinks are not needed as they are full of sugar and offer little else in terms of nutrition.
Fresh fruit and vegetables are better options to:
- Help with skill development, such as peeling and chewing
- Teach about different food textures, colours and tastes
- Add variety to the overall diet
- Provide an easy, healthy and filling snack
- Supply fibre

Move Well Eat Well
Handy hints to get the family eating more fruit and vegetables:
- Keep a bowl of fresh fruit handy and bite-sized vegetables, such as cherry tomatoes, baby carrots and snow peas in the fridge to grab as a quick snack
- Vegetables taste different raw and cooked. Why not let children taste vegetables raw, steamed, microwaved, or stir-fried to get them to say which they like best?
- Involve children in choosing fruit and vegetables to buy and, also, in cutting up and peeling them.
- Try adding fruit (fresh, dried, or canned) to breakfast cereals
- Make smoothies by blending soft fruit, such as strawberries or bananas, with milk and yogurt
- Add vegetables to favourite foods such as pizza toppings, pasta, sauces, pie fillings or cakes (e.g., grated carrot, zucchini or beetroot)
- Make vegetable pikelets or mini pizzas using rolls or muffins and use them in school lunches the next day
Involve vegetables in soups, e.g. pumpkin, minestrone or potato
