From the Principal
It was great to have the whole school back together again for an assembly, which occurred due to COVID restrictions being relaxed. Having the opportunity to celebrate learning and seeing the choir again, was fantastic! We look forward to providing further opportunities to participate in events whilst always being COVID safe.
The School Association Committee met last Thursday at the school. The committee discussed new reporting requirements, fundraising opportunities, as well as the addition of beanies to our winter school uniform. As always, please feel free to come along to our meetings – the next meeting is scheduled on 4th August at 7.00 pm.
Student reports (P-6) will be sent home on Friday, 24th June. Please spend the time to go through the report with your child. If you have any questions regarding your child’s report, feel free to discuss with your child’s teacher.
Don’t forget that three-way conferences will be happening next week. It is not too late to get online and book a time to see your child’s teacher/s. As previously advised, these meetings are a great opportunity for students, families and teachers to meet together to discuss progress, as well as plan for future learning. We look forward to catching up!

Covid-19 Update on Face Masks
Public Health has advised that from Monday, 27 June 2022, face masks are no longer mandatory in schools and Child and Family Learning Centres. This is because of reduced COVID-19 cases in our community.
It’s important to continue to:
- stay at home if unwell, and get tested
- practise COVID-safe behaviours such as frequent handwashing and sanitising
- be up to date with your COVID-19 vaccinations.
Students, staff, and visitors are supported to continue to wear face masks if they choose to. Face masks are still available at our school if you need them.
When face masks are required:
If you’re a close contact, you are still required to wear a face mask indoors as per current Public Health advice.
From time-to-time our school might identify activities or situations where masks are required to be worn. We ask for your support when this happens and know that it is in the best interests of our students, staff, and our school.
Our staff will continue to wear masks when working closely with students who are vulnerable to COVID-19.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us directly to discuss.
For more information about COVID-19, please visit the Tasmanian Government Coronavirus website or contact the Tasmanian Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738, or Department of Education COVID-19 Support Hotline at COVID19support@education.tas.gov.au or on 1800 816 057.
If you need support translating or interpreting this information, contact the Translating and Interpreting Service on 131 450.
Visiting our School
To keep our students and staff safe we have put a new system in place. Anyone visiting our school between the hours of 8.55am and 2.45pm, must sign in at the office. When signing in you will be issued with a lanyard. If you are not wearing a lanyard, it will be assumed you have not signed in, and you will be required to attend the office to do so.
Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids
Our Hilly Kid for the ‘Teamwork’ topic was Archer, from P/1P and our Aussie of the Month for May was Jazmyne, from 5/6K. Congratulations, Archer, and Jazmyne!

Our current Hilly Kids focus topic is DOING YOUR BEST. Our last focus topic for term 2 will be consequences.
Consequences
Whatever we choose to do, there will always be consequences. If you play outside in the rain, you will get wet, and your parents will probably not be happy. If you stay up late, the next morning you will not feel like getting up. If you play football inside there is a good chance, you’ll break something. That is not very smart. Better to play outside or in the park.
Consequences are natural. The difficult part is trying to work out what the consequences are before you make your choices. It is a good idea to take a bit of time to THINK first! THINK about consequences before you act.
Hands On Learning Monday Market
The Hands on Learning team will be holding another Monday Market on July 4th (not on June 24th as previously advertised).
Drop by between 2.30pm and 3pm and join in the fun!
Asthma
About one in nine people in Australia have asthma, one of the highest rates in the world.
Asthma affects people of all ages, and it can appear at any time in life. With the right medication and a daily management plan in place, asthma symptoms can be controlled.
Therefore, families MUST provide the school with an Asthma Action Plan completed by their child’s medical practitioner. The plan must outline the child’s known triggers and the emergency procedures to be taken in the event of an asthma flare-up or attack.
Asthma Action Plans should be completed/reviewed annually for your child. A copy MUST be provided to the school along with any medications required (Inhaler and spacer).
Families MUST advise the school of any change in their child’s circumstances, including any changes in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions.

5¢ Coin Challenge
Next Friday, 1 July will be the last day for our 5c coin drive. Well done to everyone who dragged those pesky little 5c coins up the hill to fill their class jars!
We’ll get them tallied up and announce our winner soon.
Will we beat the 14570 coin count from 2021?

Hillcrest Cross Country
Mr Forward and the team at Hillcrest organised our new look Cross Country Event on 2 June. The children spent lots of time in their PE lessons practising the new track Mr Forward had mapped out. It had weaves, bends, hills, and obstacles that tested the Aspiration, Courage, and Growth in our students.
It was so nice to have our wonderful school community come together to watch our students show courage, determination and true sportsmanship when participating in their cross-country race.
The staff were so impressed with the student’s participation and especially in the amount of encouragement to support every single student across the finish line.
A big congratulations goes out to all our participants and well done to those who placed in their respective races.

NWPSSA Cross Country
From our school Cross-Country event, students were then selected to participate in the NWPSSA Cross Country event held in Ulverstone. It was a very cold wintery day that Mr Hortle, Ms Cox and Mr Lyons took our 3/4 and 5/6 teams across to participate in the event.
We were all extremely proud of the efforts put in by our students and enjoyed listening to their excitement about finishing their race with some impressive places.
Thanks Mr Forward, for the organisation that went into both events.

Launch into Learning
This month in LiL at Hillcrest Primary, we have been having fun experiencing lots of activities at our on-site ‘stay, play and explore’ sessions and at different local venues. Some of our ‘stay, play and explore’ sessions have included a science experiment day and a very comfy pyjama/breakfast day. Our LiL on Location sessions have included a trip to the Devonport Library, a visit to Miandetta Park, play time at the Devonport Playhouse and some gardening fun at the Devonport Community Garden.

Passport to Learning
The Passport to Learning is a rewards card for you and your child to use every time you attend one of our birth to four years sessions or services.
Each time you and your child attend, you will receive a sticker to pop on the Passport.
Once you get to 10 stickers, your child will get to choose a free picture book and you will receive a free Banjo’s coffee.
So, come along to any or all our sessions and collect your passport and stickers.

What’s happening next
1/2Sh
In Year 1/2SH our Science Inquiry this term has been all about forces. We’ve been busy investigating the effects of pushing, pulling and gravity. Our learning has resulted from many different activities such as toy car launchers, mini paper helicopters, ramps, boat creating and even some push pull artwork! We’ve loved applying all our learning to these different tasks and having interesting conversations using our new science knowledge afterwards.

Ideas to Get Your Family Moving More
- Plan to be active together: plan an afternoon each week to have quality time together. It could be kicking the footy at the local oval, walking the dog at the park or doing a fitness DVD together
- Explore places to be active: explore a national park, go bushwalking, take a walking tour of the city, bike ride together or go beachcombing
- Reduce the amount of screen time in your house: set some family rules about screens. For example, no screens at mealtimes or a limit of two hours of screen time each day, etc
- Fit activity into your family’s routine: instead of driving right to the school gate, park a distance away and enjoy a walk in the morning or afternoon
- Be a good role model to your kids: if an active lifestyle is part of your life, you’re much more likely to pass similar good habits to your children. Kids love it when mum and dad join in their games and it’s fun for adults to remember what it was like being a kid, too!
