From the Principal
What an exciting week at Hillcrest Primary School we have had. Our Kinder open day was such a huge success, with many families and future Hillcrest Students enjoying all the amazing opportunities provided. A huge thanks to all our amazing staff who went above and beyond to organise the day. It was truly engaging experience and provided our families a small insight into what being a “Hilly Kid” is all about.
I also had the chance to purchase some goodies from our Hands on Learning fair this week. My shelf and coat hook will take pride of place in my office, and I am sure the wonderful bunch of flowers will be appreciated when I get home!!
I cannot thank Bunnings enough for the work they have done in our school, for those who follow us on Facebook I am sure you have been impressed to see the improvements to our school. Again, a huge thanks to all involved in the work, the organisation, and the opportunities it has and will continue to provide to our students.
I think if I reflect on my first week at Hillcrest, I have spent a huge amount of time saying thank you. To the students who have made me feel so welcome, to the many parents I have met who have taken the time to introduce themselves to me and to the staff who every day go beyond to provide every opportunity possible for our students.

It is very important that all students who are going to Reece High School in 2023 return their completed enrolment forms to either Reece High School Office or our School office as soon as possible
Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids
Our current Hilly Kids focus topic is Collaboration. Our next focus topic will be Sharing.
Sharing
If you want people to share with you then you should share with them. It makes you feel good and them feel good too.
People like to play with others who share. It doubles the fun. Playing football by yourself is not as much fun as playing with others.
Things to share: your toys, your games, your football, your time, your love and your feelings.
Great ways to share a toy:
- Share with someone who will enjoy it
- Look after it
- Take turns with the toy
- If there’s a problem, work it out together
- Give it back at the end of the game to the owner
- Have fun together
Life is lonely all by yourself so share it with someone!
Our Hilly Kid for the ‘Problem Solving’ topic was Inika in 5/6K and our Aussie of the Month for September was Maddi in 3/4B. Congratulations, Inika and Maddi!
Well done to our other class representatives:

What’s Happening in Prep/1 Lawes?

In Prep/1L we are exploring the questions: 'What can we learn from maps? What features are on maps?'. We have learnt about drawing a birds-eye view map of our bedroom. We are really pleased with the work that we have done on these. Our future lessons exploring these questions will include looking at atlases, maps, and globes. We will also draw a map of things that we pass as we come from our homes to school. We are also reading some fiction books called 'My Map Book', 'The Queen's Hat' and 'A walk in London'. We will adapt these stories to suit our Australian, Tasmanian or Devonport context.

Tuckerbox Tips
Dairy products all start from milk, which is a major source of calcium for growing children. For young children the need for calcium is especially high as skeletal tissue is constantly growing as they develop.
Try these ideas to add dairy foods for strong bones to your child’s lunch:
- Wholemeal or multigrain crackers with cheese and vegemite
- Low fat yoghurt
- Low fat custard with fruit
- Instant puddings made with milk
- Creamed rice
- Cheese cubes and vegetable sticks.

Screen Time
Kids get a lot of grief for spending too much time in front of the TV or computer, but we adults aren’t much better! Make a family agreement to:
- Limit screen time for everyone
- Turn the TV off after the program has finished
- Resolve to watch one less TV program a week
- Play music or stories on a CD instead
- Make mealtime your family time and turn off the TV!
