Last Day for Staff |
From the Principal
It has been an amazingly exciting time for us at Hillcrest over the last 2 weeks, highlighted by the fantastic athletics carnival held at the Devonport soccer grounds last Thursday. We were blessed with great weather and our student’s participation was outstanding. The willingness of our students to have a go was so evident to see and I was so encouraged of the support our students showed to all just to give their best. Special thanks to Mr Forward and Mrs Mulcaster for all their work in coordinating the day.
Since writing to you we have had our 1-2 excursion to the “Alphabet of Awesome Science” and I had the privilege of reading about all the great things that happened in students descriptive writing tasks that followed their excursion. I know how valuable these types of days are to engaging our students more deeply in learning and thank our staff for organising such enriching opportunities for our students.
As part of our continual work in supporting our grade 6 students to make the best start to their time at Reece High School, our grade 6’s visited Reece for an orientation experience, this is just one of the opportunities our students will get this year. Grade 6 students will be advised of other opportunities in the following weeks. Our grade 6’s are also holding a Silly Socks and Sausages event on Tuesday the 8th and we look forward to sharing a snag or 2 on the day!!
Classes for 2023
As we look to support our grade 6 students it is also time to start preparing our class list for 2023. As always working with our parents and careers is an important part of supporting our students to achieve success. If parents have a particular request regarding their child for 2022, can you please contact the office to make an appointment. We try and meet requests where possible, but a range of factors contribute to how classes are structured. We will soon be making decisions regarding classes so if you have a request, please make an appointment to see me prior to Wednesday, 23rd November.
Staff worked together on the Professional Learning Day last Friday with a focus on supporting students individual needs to be a successful learner at Hillcrest primary. In the morning session all staff, had a great session about using Microsoft TEAMS to support student learning. It was a very productive day!

Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids

Our current Hilly Kids focus topic is Sharing. Our next focus topic will be Including Others.
Including Others
Including others in your games and activities makes everyone feel good. It means that you are generous and willing to share your time with others and care about their feelings. If you include others in your games, they are more likely to include you when you are looking for someone to play with or talk to.
If you are not already doing so, try looking around to see if there are others who might like to join in. Sometimes they might not even ask to join in, but just stand close by - try to include them. If you see someone standing off alone – try to include them. If there is a new student at school – try to include them. If someone is being teased – try to include them. There are always opportunities to include others, so try to be the person who sets a good example to your fellow students by being kind and thoughtful by including others in your activities.
Our Hilly Kid for the ‘Collaboration’ topic was Indiana from P-1P. Our Aussie of the month for October was Inika from 5-6K. Congratulations, Indiana, and Inika!
Well done to our other class representatives:

Kinder Sterta
Kinder at the Athletics Carnival 2023

Our little learners in Kinder Sterta were very excited to put their fast feet on and participate in their first athletics carnival! In the weeks leading up we have looked at story books, videos and engaged in class discussions to unpack what it means to do our personal best and having a go at new things, children have related this to their past experiences and shared their own stories of courage and commitment. After returning from the carnival, we reflected on our efforts and gave ourselves praise for trying something new - what a fantastic effort from everyone!
Blast Off!
We have also put our inquiry hats on this term to investigate planets and outer space. After watching a size comparison video of planets, stars and nebulas within our universe children shared their curiosities and questions. These questions will be the driving force of our learning over the next few weeks as we put our research hats on and investigate different ways of sourcing information to satisfy our curious minds.
Here are some of our wonderings:
“How/why do planets stay up in the sky?”
“Why is space all black?”
“Why is the universe sparkly?”
“Why are suns different colours?”
“Why does Venus have so many volcanos?”
“Why is Jupiter so big?”
“Why are there moons in space?”
“Why are planets different colours?”

Fresh fruit and vegetables are better than juice drinks. Too much juice can provide too many natural sugars, which can lead to a range of problems such as tooth decay, weight gain or a poor appetite for food. If you do offer your child fruit juice, use 100% juice and dilute it with water and limit it to one small glass a day. Soft drinks, cordial, sports drinks and fruit juice drinks are not needed as they are full of sugar and offer little else in terms of nutrition.
Fresh fruit and vegetables are better options to:
- Help with skill development, such as peeling and chewing
- Teach about different food textures, colours and tastes
- Add variety to the overall diet
- Provide an easy, healthy and filling snack
- Supply fibre

Fun Family Activity Ideas:
- Instead of heading straight home, go by the park after school so kids aren’t tempted by the TV. Remember to take some healthy snacks & lots of water!
- Swimming is a great family activity. Head to the pool or, if you’re lucky, the beach. It’s also suitable for the whole family & a really important skill for the kids to have.
- Get the whole family washing the car. It’s a good way to burn off some energy!
- Get crafty! Make a kite together & then get outside to test fly it.
