From the Principal

Last Friday you would have received information regarding the 1-year anniversary of the tragedy and the public event to be held on Thursday the 15th at Market Square at 5.30 pm. We will be represented at this event by our student representative council, school association and I will be laying flowers on behalf of the school.

We continue to have many excursions for our students, that provide them authentic learning opportunities. Last week our Preps and grade 1’s went to Burnie to the museum. On Monday our grade 3 and 4 visited the maritime museum here in Devonport to reinforce their work on the first fleet and our hands on learning class went to the Devonport community garden. Tuesday, we had our kinder classes head to the Wilmot farm school for a day of discovery at the same time as our grade 6 students went to their destination High Schools to an orientation day ready for the start of 2023. This Friday our grade 6’s has their big day out celebration with a strong focus on supporting each other.

Of course, we cannot forget our end of year concert held today, where family, friends and students come together to display our amazingly talented students. I am sure everyone enjoyed the day, and many great memories were made. These days really support our students show so many of our values especially in the areas of courage and growth! These are just a small example of the way we continue to engage our students with community, something I have come to learn is such an important part of being a “Hilly Kid”.

Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids

Our current Hilly Kids focus topic is Reflection.

Our Hilly Kids value this fortnight was about Aspiration, particularly self-reflection.

Students have been taking the time this fortnight to self-reflect on themselves as a leaner and identify areas for improvement.

Our Hilly Kid for the ‘Including Others’ topic was Zailey from 1-2Si. Congratulations, Zailey!

Well done to our other class representatives:

Student Assistance Scheme (STAS)

The Department of Education offers a Student Assistance Scheme (STAS) for families that are eligible. Parents/Carers who have a current concession card, as listed below, can apply for dependent students for assistance under this scheme:

Service Australia Centrelink Health Care Card, Centrelink Low Income Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card or Department of Veteran Affairs – Pensioner Concession Card.

To assist with processing applications for new applicants, an online form is available. The online form can be completed here:

https://stasonlinesubmission.education.tas.gov.au/

Please note that, if you are already receiving student assistance, you do not need to complete a form. However, if you have a new child starting in Kinder, we recommend applying for each new child.

Once a validated form is completed, the Department of Education will confirm the outcome of your application in writing. This process takes approximately 14 days.

If the online option is not possible for you, please enquire at the school office for a paper copy.

Carols by Candlelight

On Sunday night our Primary Choir sang at the Devonport Carols by Candlelight. They were magnificent! We performed in front of our biggest ever crowd…there would have been at least 1000 people there!

We performed the traditional carol, “Joy to the World”, accompanied by the City of Devonport Brass Band (another first for us. Performing with a live band!) and then the fun song “Santa Bring Me A Dinosaur”.

I was so proud of us.

Hands On Learning

On Monday our Hands on Learning Team attended the Devonport Community Garden to learn about sustainability and gather ideas to bring back for our Kindergarten area. We did a treasure hunt in the garden and ate some beautiful produce, including edible flowers! We then finished off with a lovely hot chocolate in the café.

We finished off our final Hands On Learning Day for the year with a successful Xmas Market at school.

What a great year we have had in Hands On Learning.

HOL Excursion

1-2 Shephard

In 1/2SH we have been looking at a new science unit all about our earths position in space. We have all loved learning about our massive solar system and have created some amazing art to show this. We created 3D models of the solar system and made sure to include all eight planets as well as the sun. After learning our fun solar system song, we chose a favourite planet to draw and create these beautiful art pieces to hang in the classroom. We have enjoyed this unit and we hope the families at home have enjoyed listening to our favourite solar system song too!
