From the Principal

Welcome back to term 3 everyone! Term 3 is always a very busy one, with lots of events happening throughout the term. Don’t forget to keep up to date with all that is happening; through our newsletter, Facebook page or on Seesaw. We are currently working on a new webpage as well, so watch this space!

I am so proud to inform the community of Myha Peterson’s achievements in the Judo Victoria

Tournament in Melbourne over the weekend. She won all her matches in under 12 in her weight division, including against Victoria State Champion. Although she was nervous, as a true Hilly Kid she didn’t give up and won gold. Well done, Myha! What a fantastic effort!

Well done to our Children’s University members who have been busy working on their passport hours. We would like to remind students that they have until the 12th August to finalise hours in their passport. A graduation ceremony will be happening in Devonport on Tuesday, 17th September. More information will be provided closer to the date. If you have any questions regarding Children’s University, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

A reminder that our School Association Committee will be meeting next Thursday, 8th August at 7.00 pm in the staffroom. As always, if you want to find out further information, please contact the school office.

Child and Student Wellbeing Survey

The wellbeing of our students is important to us. To get an understanding of how students across Tasmania feel about their own wellbeing, students in Years 1–3 at Hillcrest Primary School will be taking part in a wellbeing survey.

This is a trial of the Early Years wellbeing survey, Rumble’s Quest, which is being trialled across 28 schools as part of the Department of Education’s Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy.

The details for the survey in our school are:

Name of survey:

Rumble’s Quest

When:

12th – 16th August

Who:

Students in Years 1–3

What do I need to do: You and your child do not need to do anything. The survey will be done in class time and will not require your child to prepare in any way.

A letter with more information has been sent home with all students in Years 1–3, including Frequently Asked Questions, and a form to sign and return to the school if you do not want your child to participate in the survey. If you would like further information, please contact Jerome Pape.

Thank you for supporting us to ensure that all our learners are safe, feel supported and are able to flourish, so they can engage in learning.

Hilly Kids Are Friendly Kids

Our current fortnightly Hilly Kids focus has been “Rights & Responsibilities”. Our focus topic for the next two weeks will be “Fixing Things Up”.

Fixing Things Up

From time to time we all make mistakes. At times we make these mistakes accidentally, at other times we are careless or, occasionally, we simply choose to do something we should not. Mistakes are a normal part of growing up and if we learn from our mistakes we end up better in the end.

Learning to “fix things up” after mistakes is a difficult thing to do, but it is so important. Fixing things up means repairing the damage you have caused to someone or something. It means you take responsibility for what has happened and, through your actions, prove to others and yourself that you know you have made a mistake and you want to improve the situation.

Be prepared to say sorry and then prove you are sorry by not letting it happen again. If something has been damaged, offer to fix it or replace it.

Take responsibility for your actions and be the first to say sorry; don’t wait until you have to apologise or be told to by someone else.

Our Hilly Kid for “Respecting Adults” was Shataya from 2-3P and our Aussie of the Month for June was Mikayla from P-1P. Congratulations, Shataya and Mikayla and well done to our other class representatives.

Marble Runs

What an amazing variety of marble runs you have created! If you haven’t had the chance to see them yet, please pop into the library before or after school this week to see them in action. The marble runs are another fantastic example of the way Hillcrest families work together to help their children be the best they can be. Thank you every one for taking on the challenge.

Storytime in the Library

Storytime in the Library will be every Thursday in even weeks this term, straight after school, 2:45 – 3:15pm. See you there!

Date Reminder for Grandparents, Aunts or Uncles

Monday, 16th September is Keirō no Hi (敬老の日) in Japan. It is a public holiday that acknowledges, honours and celebrates the mature members of society. Their experiences, wisdom and contributions to families and the community are recognised. We will celebrate Keirō no Hi at school during Japanese classes. Grandparents, aunts or uncles are invited to come in and learn some Japanese, too! Watch out for invitations later in the term.

Those who do not have their Working With Vulnerable People registration – Please come to the library and use our facilities to do this and I will be there to support you should you need help. Remember: if you wish to attend a class excursion or participate in parent help with your child/ren you are required to have one.

Fathers’ Day Stall

The Fathers’ Day Stall will be held on Wednesday, August 28th. The purpose of the stall is to give each child an opportunity to buy a small gift for their father for Fathers’ Day. It is also a School Association fundraising event.

Parents are asked to buy or make a small gift to the value of $3 and send it to school by Monday, August 26th. Please do not wrap gifts. Your child will put the present in a box in the classroom and tick their name on the list on the box. Every child who donates to the stall will go into a draw to win a gift for Dad.

On the day of the stall please send your child to school with $3 to purchase a gift for Dad. If you do not want your child to participate, please tell him/her beforehand.

Donations of wrapping paper are also needed. Offers of assistance to help run the stall on the Wednesday from 9-10:30am would be most welcome. Please leave your name at the school office if you can help on the day.

Cycling @ Lunch

Grade Prep to 2 cyclists will be permitted to ride their bikes at lunchtime around the school oval on Friday, August 2nd (weather permitting). In the morning Mr Carter and Mr Fenn will be supervising the Lovett St and Valley Road intersections to ensure students riding their bikes to school are doing so safely.

4/5 Kelly

4/5 Kelly have been busy….we couldn’t choose just one item to share!

In the final week of last term, Hillcrest Primary was visited by Firefighter Craig from the Tasmania Fire Service. He worked with all of our students to share information about how we can all be safe at home. 4/5 Kelly used a picture of a fire fighter entering a burning building as a stimulus for some creative writing.

We also finished our class novel – A Fish in a Tree. It’s a great story! It’s about a young girl called Ally who has dyslexia. She found it hard to learn until she met Mr Daniels and he taught her that ‘the bravest thing you can do is ask for help.’ We drew our impressions of one part of the story that we had made a connection with.

5₵ Coin Challenge

Have you been collecting 5¢ coins over the holidays? We will run the 5¢ coin challenge over Term 3, so start bringing your coins in, piling them up and we’ll see which class can collect the most! Our grand total for last year was 12,180 5¢ coins!! Let’s top that this year and set a new record!

Tuckerbox Tips

Sometimes it can be hard to think of something to make for lunchboxes. Try to include foods from as many of the food groups as you can. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Chicken & chopped vegetables in pita bread
  • Lean roast beef, mustard & lettuce on wholegrain bread
  • Pasta with chicken, 3 bean mix & mixed vegetables
  • Leftover homemade pizza
  • Chicken, tomato, lettuce & cucumber in a wrap
  • Fill a container with cherry tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, egg, cheese cubes & a small bread roll
  • Vegemite, cheese & chopped celery in a wholemeal roll

Move Well Eat Well

August is fruit and vegetable month

Handy hints to get the family eating more fruit and vegetables:

  • Keep a bowl of fresh fruit handy and bite-sized vegetables, such as cherry tomatoes, baby carrots and snow peas in the fridge to grab as a quick snack
  • Vegetables taste different raw and cooked. Why not let children taste vegetables raw, steamed, microwaved or stir-fried to get them to say which they like best?
  • Involve children in choosing fruit and vegetables to buy and also in cutting up and peeling them.
  • Try adding fruit (fresh, dried or canned) to breakfast cereals
  • Make smoothies by blending soft fruit, such as strawberries or bananas, with milk and yoghurt
  • Add vegetables to favourite foods such as pizza toppings, pasta, sauces, pie fillings or cakes (eg grated carrot, zucchini or beetroot)
  • Make vegetable pikelets or mini-pizzas using rolls or muffins and use them in school lunches the next day
  • Include vegetables in soups, eg pumpkin, minestrone or potato
